Chapter 8 - Justice Falls

The front and back doors of the house were kicked open simultaneously with a thunderous CRACK!

"FBI! DON'T MOVE! GET ON THE GROUND!"

Six tactical agents swarmed into the dining room, their weapons raised, red laser sights pinning Evan’s chest to the wall.

Evan let out a high-pitched, pathetic shriek, dropping his crowbar onto the floor, throwing his hands above his head as he stumbled backward against the sideboard, knocking over a crystal vase.

"GET ON THE GROUND! NOW!" an agent barked.

Evan collapsed onto his knees, trembling like a leaf, weeping hysterically as the agents tackled him to the Persian rug, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Delilah didn't move from her chair. She watched him lie on the floor—this man who had tormented her, starved her, and tried to destroy her life—and realized that beneath his cruelty, he was nothing more than a pathetic, cowardly fraud.

At that exact moment, a second team of local police officers pulled up to the extended-stay motel near the airport, arresting Brenda Mercer as she attempted to load three suitcases full of stolen jewelry into a taxi cab.

I ran into the house, bursting through the front door, and wrapped Delilah in a fierce, tight hug.

"You did it, sweetheart," I wept, kissing her forehead. "You did it."

Delilah leaned against my chest, watching two federal agents drag Evan out the front door in handcuffs. As Evan passed her, his face covered in tears, he looked at Delilah, begging, "Delilah, please! Tell them it's a mistake! Talk to them! Please!"

Delilah looked him straight in the eyes and said two words:

"Goodbye, Evan."
