Chapter 9 - Healing and New Beginnings

Spring arrived in New York, bringing warm breezes, blooming cherry blossoms, and a fresh start.
Our Brooklyn apartment was completely transformed. The cold, dark atmosphere was gone, replaced by soft pastel colors, plush furniture, warm sunlight streaming through big windows, and the constant, joyful sounds of a thriving baby.
Liam was now six months old—a chubby, happy, healthy boy with bright blue eyes and a infectious giggle. He was hitting all his developmental milestones, completely unaffected by the ordeal of his first few days of life.
Maya had made a full physical recovery. Her incision had healed cleanly, her energy was back, and with the support of a wonderful therapist, she was processing the trauma of her early postpartum experience.
I took a permanent transition at my engineering firm, stepping down from international field travel to take an executive director position based right in Manhattan. I was home every single evening by 5:30 p.m.
One Saturday afternoon, Tomas and Gabriel came over for a backyard barbecue in our newly renovated garden patio. Tomas was sitting in a wooden rocking chair, holding Liam on his lap, teaching him how to hold a wooden toy train.
Maya stood beside me near the grill, leaning her head against my shoulder as we watched them.
"What are you thinking about?" I asked, wrapping my arm around her waist.
May you like
"I was thinking about how close I came to losing everything," Maya whispered, looking up at me with tears of gratitude in her eyes. "And how you fought for us when I couldn't fight for myself."
"You never have to fight alone again, Maya," I said softly, kissing her lips. "We built a real family now. A real home."
