Chapter 6 - The In-Laws Step In

While my biological family was facing the full force of the law, Maya’s family arrived in New York.

Maya’s father, Tomas, and her older brother, Gabriel, had flown in from Chicago the moment I called them to explain what had happened. Tomas was a retired carpenter—a quiet, gentle man with calloused hands and a fierce devotion to his daughter.

When Tomas walked into the service apartment and saw Maya holding baby Liam, he broke down in tears, wrapping his daughter in a tight, protective embrace.

"My sweet girl," Tomas murmured, kissing Maya’s hair. "I am so sorry I wasn't here. I am so sorry."

"It's okay, Papa," Maya wept softly. "David came home. He saved us."

Tomas turned to look at me. For a moment, I felt a knot of anxiety in my stomach. I worried he would blame me for leaving Maya under the care of my toxic mother while I was away in Germany.

Instead, Tomas walked over, grabbed my hand in a tight grip, and pulled me into a fierce embrace.

"Thank you, son," Tomas said, his voice deep and choked with emotion. "You chose your wife and child over blood that tried to destroy them. That makes you a real man."

Gabriel, Maya’s brother, stepped forward with a warm smile, clapping my shoulder. "We're here now, David. You don't have to carry this fight alone anymore. Whatever you need—legal help, moving, taking care of the baby—we're a team."

For the first time since returning from Stuttgart, I felt the heavy burden on my shoulders begin to lighten.

Unlike the toxic, transactional environment I had grown up in with Eleanor and Chloe—where love was measured in dollars and obedience—Maya’s family showed unconditional support, kindness, and genuine love.

Over the next few weeks, Tomas and Gabriel helped me pack up the Brooklyn apartment. We threw out every piece of furniture that my mother and sister had touched, replacing everything with new, warm, and beautiful pieces. Gabriel installed a state-of-the-art, high-security system with encrypted access that only Maya and I controlled.

Our home was no longer a place of betrayal. We were transforming it into a sanctuary for our son.
