Chapter 10 - The New Year’s Light

One year later. December 31st.
The apartment was filled with warmth, music, and the delicious aroma of roasted chicken, fresh bread, and cinnamon apple pie.
Tomas, Gabriel, and a few of our closest, truest friends were gathered in our living room. Fairy lights twinkled along the mantlepiece, and a grand holiday tree stood proudly in the corner, covered in ornaments and photos of Liam’s first year.
Liam, now over a year old, was walking around on steady little legs, wearing a tiny red sweater, giggling as he chased Tomas’s golden retriever around the soft rug.
At 11:55 p.m., as the television broadcast showed the crowds gathering in Times Square for the New Year’s Eve ball drop, I stepped out onto the balcony with Maya.
The cool winter air was crisp and refreshing, but inside our hearts, there was only warmth. I held a glass of champagne, while Maya held her glass of sparkling cider.
One year ago at this exact minute, I had arrived home to a nightmare—a dark, freezing apartment, a bleeding wife, a shivering child, and a bitter sense of betrayal that almost destroyed my soul.
Now, as the crowd on TV began the ten-second countdown to midnight, I looked at Maya. Her skin was glowing, her smile was radiant, and her eyes were filled with peace.
"Ten! Nine! Eight!" the crowd echoed through the city.
I pulled Maya close to my side, feeling her warmth, hearing the laughter of our son echoing from the warm living room behind us.
"Three! Two! One! Happy New Year!"
Fireworks exploded across the Manhattan skyline, lighting up the night sky in brilliant bursts of gold, crimson, and emerald green.

I leaned down and kissed my wife deeply, held her hand tight, and looked out over the sparkling city.
The painful shadows of the past were completely gone, burned away by the light of truth, justice, and an unshakeable love that would protect our family for the rest of our lives.
