Chapter 5 - THE LEGAL SIEGE

Two weeks passed.
While Graham and Vivian were reduced to living in a tiny, cramped one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the city—funded by the minuscule remains of Vivian’s pawned jewelry—my life with Lucas and Leo flourished in absolute peace.
The twins were gaining healthy weight, sleeping through the night under the care of top pediatric specialists, and bringing a profound, radiant joy into my world. I spent my mornings working from my sunlit study, managing my global empire while holding my sons against my chest.
However, desperation makes weak men foolish.
On a cold Tuesday morning, Marcus walked into my study, carrying a formal legal summons.
"Graham’s court-appointed attorney just filed a motion with the Cook County Family Court," Marcus reported, setting the document on my desk. "He is suing for emergency custody of Lucas and Leo, along with five hundred thousand dollars a month in temporary spousal support."
I raised an eyebrow, taking a sip of my morning espresso. "On what grounds?"
"He is claiming that you hid your true financial identity during the marriage, creating a 'fraudulent marital environment,'" Marcus chuckled softly. "He also claims that your high-demanding career as a billionaire CEO makes you an 'unfit, absentee mother,' and that the children deserve to be raised in the 'traditional family care' of their father and grandmother."
I let out a soft, melodious laugh that echoed off the glass walls. "He wants five hundred thousand a month to fund his mother's luxury lifestyle while trying to take my ten-day-old babies away from me?"
"His attorney is a notoriously sleazy tabloid lawyer who specializes in high-profile celebrity shakedowns," Marcus added. "They have called a public preliminary hearing for tomorrow morning at the county courthouse. They invited three television crews, hoping to use public pressure and media drama to force you into a private monetary settlement."
I looked over at the nursery wing, where Lucas was letting out a sweet, soft coo in his sleep.
The fire inside my chest burned bright and clean.
"They want a public spectacle, Marcus?" I asked, my voice dropping into an octave of lethal absolute power. "Then give them front-row seats."
"Shall I summon the legal team?"
"Summon all forty-five partners," I commanded, standing up smoothly. "And contact the State Financial Crimes Division. Tell them I am ready to hand over the unredacted forensic audit of Graham's corporate accounts."
The following morning at 9:00 AM, the steps of the Cook County Family Courthouse were packed with reporters, news vans, and flashing cameras.
Graham arrived wearing a borrowed suit that was slightly too small for him, trying to look like a stoic, mistreated father fighting for his children. Beside him stood Vivian, wearing a dark dress, holding a handkerchief, squeezing out fake tears for the gathering photographers.
"I just want to be a father to my sons!" Graham announced dramatic into a cluster of news microphones. "My wife lied to me about who she was! She used her billions to crush my family and steal my newborn boys! I am here today for justice!"
The media crowd buzzed with sensational excitement.
Suddenly, three long black limousines pulled up to the courthouse curb in flawless formation.
Out stepped eight senior attorneys in immaculate suits, followed by twelve paralegals carrying steel briefcases. They lined up on either side of the center limousine door.
The door opened.
I stepped out.
I wore an ivory silk coat over a tailored navy dress, looking every bit the ruler of an eight-billion-dollar empire. Beside me walked two private security guards carrying custom, secure baby carriers holding Lucas and Leo, shielding them perfectly from the flashing cameras.
The reporters swarmed forward, shouting questions endlessly:
"Ms. Vale! Is it true you hid your wealth from your husband?!" "Ms. Vale! Are you trying to deny Mr. Harrington access to his sons?!"
I didn't answer a single question. I walked past the screaming media with absolute, unshakeable composure, my head held high, my stride commanding the entire courtyard.
Inside Courtroom 402, the air was suffocatingly tense.
Judge Margaret Vance—a sharp, fifty-year-old family court judge known for having zero tolerance for corporate games—sat on the bench, reviewing the preliminary filings.
Graham’s attorney stood up first, puffing out his chest arrogantly.
"Your Honor!" the lawyer bellowed. "We are here today to address a tragic abuse of power! My client, Graham Harrington, was deceptively misled by a woman who hid an eight-billion-dollar fortune! She has stripped him of his employment, evicted him from his ancestral home, and severed his bond with his ten-day-old twin sons!"
The lawyer gestured toward Graham, who wiped away a fake tear.
"We demand immediate temporary joint custody of the children, along with an emergency spousal maintenance order of five hundred thousand dollars per month so my client can secure suitable living quarters for his sons!"
Judge Vance remained unimpressionable. She turned her sharp eyes toward my lead attorney, Arthur Pendelton.
"Counselor Pendelton," Judge Vance said. "How does the defense respond?"
Arthur stood up calmly, buttoning his suit jacket.
"Your Honor, we do not respond with emotional theater," Arthur said smoothly. "We respond with certified police records, audio recordings, and federal financial filings."
Arthur motioned to a paralegal, who set a master electronic display drive onto the judge’s bench.
"First, regarding the claim of 'absentee mothering,'" Arthur stated, pressing a remote control.
The wall-mounted courtroom monitor clicked on.
A crystal-clear, high-definition security video played—taken from the front porch of the Harrington mansion sixteen days prior.
The video showed Graham forcefully shoving me into the freezing snow, holding my ten-day-old infants, while Vivian spat at my face and shrieked: "Get out and take your bastards with you!"
The clear audio echoed through the silent courtroom: "A cheap little designer like you trapping me with babies? You should be grateful I let you stay this long!"
The entire courtroom gasped. The news reporters sitting in the back row began furiously typing on their laptops.
Graham’s face turned from pale to ghostly white. Vivian shrank into her chair, trying to hide her face behind her purse.
Judge Vance’s eyes hardened into terrifying flint as she stared at Graham. "Is that video authentic, Mr. Harrington?"
"Y-Your Honor... it was taken out of context!" Graham stammered, sweating through his shirt. "I was stressed! My mother was angry!"
"Out of context?" Judge Vance repeated, her voice dripping with lethal disdain. "You threw a woman recovering from a C-section and two ten-day-old babies into a snowstorm at midnight, and you claim it was 'out of context'?"
"Furthermore, Your Honor," Arthur Pendelton continued smoothly, pulling out a secondary legal document. "Regarding Mr. Harrington's request for five hundred thousand dollars a month in spousal support... we have brought two special guests to the courtroom today."
The double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.
Two uniformed federal agents from the Internal Revenue Service and two state prosecutors walked down the center aisle.
"Graham Harrington," the lead federal agent announced, standing behind Graham's chair. "You are under arrest for federal grand larceny, tax evasion, and corporate embezzlement of four.two million dollars from Harrington Luxe accounts."
"What?!" Graham screamed, jumping out of his chair. "No! Evelyn! Tell them to stop!"
"Take him into custody," Judge Vance ordered flatly, slamming her gavel onto the wooden block with a loud, final BOOM.

"As for custody," Judge Vance declared, looking directly at me with a nod of deep respect, "Evelyn Vale is granted absolute, sole legal and physical custody of Lucas and Leo Vance. Mr. Harrington is granted zero visitation rights pending his criminal trial. Court is adjourned."
Handcuffs clicked loudly around Graham's wrists. He screamed and sobbed as federal agents dragged him out of the courtroom past his wailing mother, who collapsed onto the floor in complete, utter ruin.
