Chapter 4 - VIVIAN'S DESPERATION

While Graham was being publicly dismantled at corporate headquarters, Vivian Harrington was sitting on a plastic chair inside the lobby of a cheap two-star airport motel, her silk robe stained with slush and her pristine hair ruined.

She was furiously dialing her high-society friends, trying to find a place to stay.

"Victoria, darling!" Vivian cooed into her phone, trying to maintain her haughty, aristocratic tone. "Our mansion is undergoing some sudden... electrical renovations today! I was wondering if Graham and I could stay in your guest cottage for a few days?"

"Oh, Vivian, sweetie," her friend replied over the line, her voice dripping with fake concern. "Haven't you seen the morning financial news?"

Vivian frowned. "Financial news? What are you talking about?"

"Turn on the TV in the lobby, dear," her friend said before abruptly hanging up.

Vivian rushed over to the small wall-mounted television in the motel lobby. The local news anchor was broadcasting live from outside the Harrington Luxe corporate headquarters.

"Breaking news in Chicago business," the reporter announced, standing before a crowd of flashing cameras. "Graham Harrington, former VP of Marketing at Harrington Luxe, was just forcefully escorted out of corporate headquarters by security following an emergency buyout by Vale International Holdings."

The footage showed Graham, red-faced, crying, and holding a single cardboard box containing his desk supplies, being pushed through the revolving glass doors toward the street.

"Sources confirm that Vale International—headed by elusive billionaire CEO Evelyn Vale—has placed Harrington Luxe under total financial restructuring following allegations of multi-million-dollar internal fraud."

Vivian’s phone slipped from her hand, crashing onto the dirty linoleum floor.

"Evelyn...?" Vivian whispered, her throat closing up in sheer terror. "Evelyn... Vale?!"

At that exact moment, Graham stumbled through the glass doors of the motel, looking like a ghost that had been dragged through a hurricane. His suit jacket was torn, his tie was gone, and he collapsed onto a cheap vinyl sofa, burying his head in his hands.

"Mother..." Graham sobbed hysterically. "It's over... it's all over..."

Vivian rushed over to him, grabbing him violently by his lapels. "Graham! What was that on the news?! What does Evelyn have to do with Vale International?!"

"She IS Vale International!" Graham screamed, drawing looks from the motel clerk. "She owns everything! The house, the cars, the company, the bank accounts! She bought Harrington Luxe years ago! She was testing me, Mother! She was testing us!"

Vivian gasped, stumbling back, clutching her pearl necklace as if it were suffocating her. "No... no, that's impossible! She was poor! She wore off-the-rack clothes! She didn't even have a diamond ring when you married her!"

"Because she wanted someone who loved her for HER, not her eight billion dollars!" Graham yelled, slamming his fist against his knee. "And you... you treated her like garbage! You made me throw her out into the freezing snow with my own sons!"

"Me?!" Vivian shrieked, her face twisting into rage. "You were the one who pushed her out the door! You were the one who called her a seamstress! You idiot! You had an eight-billion-dollar fortune in your hands and you threw it into the street!"

"We have to go to her," Graham said, standing up frantically, his eyes wild with desperation. "We have to go to her penthouse downtown! We'll beg! We'll crawl! We'll tell her it was a misunderstanding!"

"Yes... yes!" Vivian agreed, her mind racing. "The babies! She loves those babies! She won't let the father of her children rot in the gutter! We'll use the children!"

Twenty minutes later, a yellow taxi pulled up outside the grand glass entrance of the Vale International Tower—the most expensive residential skyscraper in Chicago.

Graham and Vivian rushed through the sliding doors, charging toward the private elevator bank.

"Stop right there," a towering security officer commanded, stepping into their path with three armed guards behind him.

"Get out of my way!" Vivian yelled, trying to push past him. "I am Vivian Harrington! My daughter-in-law lives on the top floor! I have every right to see my grandsons!"

The security chief pulled out a tablet, scrolling down a black list.

"Graham and Vivian Harrington?" the chief asked coldly.

"Yes!" Graham pleaded. "Tell Evelyn I'm here! Tell her Graham is here to see his sons!"

The security chief offered a cold, mocking smile. "Ms. Vale anticipated your arrival. She left a personal message for both of you."

Graham’s eyes lit up with pathetic hope. "A message?! What is it?!"

The chief tapped the tablet, and a recorded audio clip played through the lobby speaker system.

My voice echoed through the grand marble space, cool, crisp, and absolute:

"If Graham or Vivian Harrington set foot within five hundred feet of this building, execute Restraining Order Protocol 4. Notify local law enforcement, release the full audit reports of Graham's corporate fraud to the State Prosecutor's office, and initiate immediate foreclosure on Vivian Harrington's secondary properties."

The recording clicked off.

Graham’s hope shattered into a million bloody pieces.

The security chief stepped forward, signaling his guards. "You have thirty seconds to leave the lobby before we execute Protocol 4."

Vivian dropped to her knees on the polished marble floor, her silk robe dragging in the mud brought in from outside, wailing at the top of her lungs like a wounded animal. "Evelyn! Please! Forgive us! Evelyn!"

The guards grabbed Vivian and Graham by their shoulders, dragging them backward out of the warm luxury of the tower, tossing them unceremoniously onto the icy pavement outside, where the freezing Chicago wind howled without mercy.
