Chapter 7 - The Overture of Treason

Friday, 9:30 AM.

The steel-and-glass tower of Mercer Ridge Technologies rose eighty stories above the windy streets of downtown Chicago.

Inside the executive boardroom on the top floor, twenty-four board members, major institutional investors, and legal representatives sat around a massive oval table crafted from polished black granite. The sweeping windows offered a panoramic view of Lake Michigan under a crisp, gray November sky.

Richard Vance sat at the head of the table. He wore a six-thousand-dollar bespoke navy suit, his hair impeccably styled, looking every bit the ruthless tech titan ready to claim his crown.

Sitting quietly in the leather gallery seats along the perimeter of the room was Vanessa Hale. She wore an elegant, understated charcoal dress, her eyes downcast, playing the role of a deeply concerned, heartbroken partner to perfection.

"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," Richard began, his voice solemn and heavy with manufactured grief.

My chief security officer, Marcus, was secretly streaming the boardroom’s live audio and video feed directly to my mobile device inside the executive elevator bank on the 79th floor. My translation app displayed every word in real-time on my tablet screen.

"As many of you are aware," Richard continued, placing his hands flat on the granite table, "our brilliant founder and CEO, Arthur Mercer, has been battling a sudden, tragic medical crisis over the past four months."

A soft murmur of sympathetic murmurs passed through the older board members.

"Arthur’s condition has reached a catastrophic point," Richard lied seamlessly, picking up a thick leather-bound binder. "According to comprehensive neurological assessments conducted by Dr. Julian Sterling—one of the country’s leading specialists—Arthur has suffered profound, irreversible sensorineural hearing loss paired with rapid neurovascular decline. He is no longer capable of processing auditory information or managing day-to-day executive decisions."

"This is devastating news, Richard," Senator Thomas, a senior board member, spoke up. "Is Arthur receiving proper care?"

"He is surrounded by love," Richard sighed, casting a warm, supportive glance toward Vanessa in the gallery. "Vanessa has been an absolute angel, staying by his side night and day. But our primary duty today is to the shareholders of Mercer Ridge Technologies. We cannot allow a six-billion-dollar enterprise to float without a captain."

Richard tapped a button on the conference system, projecting a legal document onto the massive wall screens.

"Under Section 8 of our corporate charter, I am formally opening the vote to suspend Arthur Mercer’s executive voting power and transfer temporary Chief Executive authority to myself, effective immediately."

"Has Arthur been informed of this vote?" another board member asked, looking slightly uncomfortable.

"Arthur was informed yesterday," Vanessa spoke up softly from the gallery, wiping a small, imaginary tear from her cheek. "He... he was heartbroken, but he understood. He begged us to protect his legacy. He isn't strong enough to attend today."

"Then let us proceed to the roll-call vote," Richard declared, a sharp, triumphant smile twitching at the corner of his lips. "All those in favor of transferring executive authority—"

BOOM.

The heavy, double mahogany doors at the back of the boardroom swung open with violent force, slamming against the polished marble walls.
