Chapter 2 - The Second Pink Line

The Moretti estate in upstate New York was a fortress of limestone and iron, nestled behind three miles of private woodland. It was a place designed to keep the world out, but tonight, for Norah, it felt like a gilded cage where her deepest secret was about to be unraveled.

Matteo had kept his arm around her during the entire forty-minute drive from Brooklyn. He hadn't asked a single question. He hadn't demanded to know who Derek was, why he was touching her, or what he had meant by his parting words. That was Matteo’s way. He gathered his data in silence before he struck.

Now, sitting in the private library on the second floor, the fire crackling in the hearth threw long, amber shadows across the rows of leather-bound books. Norah sat on the plush velvet sofa, a cup of chamomile tea warming her hands, though her insides were still churning.

Matteo stood by the window, his charcoal jacket removed, the sleeves of his white silk shirt rolled up to his forearms. He was pouring two fingers of scotch into a crystal tumbler, his movements precise and calm.

"He was my fiancé, three years ago," Norah said into the silence. She couldn't bear the quiet anymore. It was worse than his anger. "Before I met you. Before my father’s debts became your property."

Matteo turned around, the amber liquid swirling in his glass. "I know who he is, Norah. I knew his name, his criminal record, and his gambling debts within ten minutes of our marriage contract being signed. What I do not know is why he believed he had the right to touch what belongs to me."

"He's unstable, Matteo. When I left him, he swore he'd make me pay. He saw the news of our wedding in the papers a few months ago... he thought I married you for the money."

"You did marry me for the money," Matteo said simply, taking a slow sip of his drink. He walked over, sitting on the opposite end of the sofa. "Or rather, your father traded you to clear his ledger. But a contract is a contract. You are a Moretti now. And the world must learn what happens to those who touch a Moretti."

Norah swallowed hard. Her hand drifted back down to her stomach, an automatic reflex she couldn't control.

Matteo’s eyes tracked the movement instantly. He set his crystal tumbler down on the mahogany coffee table with a soft, deliberate clink.

"He said something else before I broke his man’s wrist," Matteo murmured, leaning forward, his gray eyes locking onto hers with terrifying intensity. "He asked if you were pregnant."

Norah’s breath hitched. She looked away, staring into the flickering flames of the fireplace. "He was just throwing insults, Matteo. He was trying to hurt me."

"Norah." Matteo’s hand reached out, his long fingers gently grasping her chin, forcing her to look back at him. "Do not lie to me. You have many virtues, but you are a terrible liar. Your hand hasn't left your stomach since I entered that café. Your pulse is racing, and you haven't touched your tea because you are afraid the smell will make you sick."

A single tear escaped Norah’s eye, tracing a path down her pale cheek. She reached into the pocket of her wool coat, which was draped over the back of the sofa, and pulled out a small plastic cylinder. She placed it on the table next to his scotch.

The second pink line was faint, but unmistakable.

Matteo stared at the small piece of plastic for a long, unreadable moment. For the first time since Norah had known him, the absolute stillness of his face cracked. A subtle tension appeared in his jaw, his chest rising in a deep, slow breath.

"How long?" he asked, his voice lower than usual.

"Six weeks," she whispered. "I found out this morning. I went to the café to think. I didn't expect him to be there, Matteo. I swear I didn't."

Matteo stood up, turning his back to her as he walked back to the window. The silence stretched until it became a physical weight in the room. Norah clutched her hands together, terrified of what a man like Matteo Moretti—a man raised on blood, iron, and political alliances—would say about an unplanned child born from a forced marriage.

When he turned back around, his face was a mask of cold resolution. "The Romano family has been looking for a weakness in my perimeter for six months, Norah. If they discover you are carrying the heir to the Moretti seat, this house will become a war zone. From this moment on, you do not leave this estate without Silas and four armed guards. Is that understood?"

It wasn't a declaration of love. It was a declaration of ownership and security. But as Norah nodded, she saw the way his hand gripped the back of his chair so tightly his knuckles turned white. He was afraid for her. And that made him twice as dangerous.
