Chapter 9 - The Purge of the Valley

The transformation of the Moretti family’s operations over the next three months was total and absolute. The Romano name was systematically erased from the city’s ledgers. Their warehouses were sold to legitimate shipping syndicates; their captains were either sent to federal penitentiaries or forced into permanent retirement across the state line.

In the valley district of Brooklyn, where Norah had once been trapped in her toxic past, the streets had grown quiet. The small shops no longer paid protection fees to street thugs; the police cruisers patrolled the avenues with an unusual, disciplined frequency. The city had a new master, and his rule was based on an iron stability.

At the Moretti estate, the changing of the seasons brought a beautiful, crisp autumn. The limestone walls had been repaired, the stained-glass windows replaced with thick, reinforced ballistic glass that caught the golden light of the October sun.

Norah stood in the nursery on the third floor, her hand resting on her significantly rounded belly. She was seven months pregnant now, her face full and healthy, the dark circles that had plagued her during her weeks of terror completely gone. The room was decorated in soft creams and warm woods, a beautiful hand-carved crib sitting near the window that looked out over the peaceful woodland.

The door opened softly, and Matteo stepped inside. He had discarded his dark suits for a simple gray cashmere sweater, his hair slightly messy from the autumn wind outside. He walked over to her, his movements no longer carrying that rigid, defensive tension that had defined him for thirty years.

"The final contracts for the Brooklyn waterfront were signed today," Matteo said, his voice low and warm as he stood behind her, his arms wrapping around her waist, his hands resting gently over the heavy curve of her stomach. "The valley is secure. Your father’s old debts have been legally dissolved by the estate court. You are free, Norah. Completely free."

Norah turned in his arms, her hands coming up to rest against his chest. She could feel the steady, calm beat of his heart beneath the soft wool. "I don't want to be free of you, Matteo. I used to think this house was a cage. But now... I know it’s the only place in the world where I can breathe."

Matteo leaned down, his forehead resting against hers. "I spent my entire life believing that love was a weakness, Norah. My father loved his family, and it made him soft enough to trust a friend who carried a gun. But when I saw that man’s hand on your throat in the café... I realized that my anger wasn't a vulnerability. It was my truest weapon. I do not protect you because you are my contract, mia cara. I protect you because you are my life."

For the first time since she had known him, a genuine, soft smile broke through his aristocratic features—a smile that reached his clear, gray eyes and made him look like a man who had finally stepped out of the shadows and into the sun.

"The doctor says it’s a boy," Norah whispered, her eyes shining with tears of pure happiness.

Matteo’s hand shifted slightly, feeling a distinct, sharp kick from beneath the fabric of her dress. His smile widened, his fingers tightening against hers with an incredible, warm pressure. "Then he will be taught to build things, not break them. He will carry the name Moretti, but he will never have to clean blood off his cuffs."
