Chapter 6 - The Public Execution

The ballroom went deathly quiet. Every eye in the room shifted from the stage down to Grant Holloway, who was standing alone in the middle aisle like a man facing a firing squad.

Grant took three hesitant steps toward the stage, his hands raised in a pleading gesture.

"Emma..." Grant stammered, his voice amplified slightly by the room's acoustics. "Emma, please. We... we can talk about this in private. This isn't the place for personal disputes."

Emma looked down at him from the elevated stage, her expression completely unreadable.

"This is not a personal dispute, Mr. Holloway," Emma said, her voice detached and professional. "This is a vendor review. As Chairwoman, it is my fiduciary duty to ensure that all corporate partners meeting our standards possess adequate financial solvency, operational stability, and executive integrity."

She nodded to Nathan Brooks, who stepped up to the stage carrying a thin black leather folder. Nathan handed the folder to Emma.

Emma opened it.

"Holloway Logistics," Emma read aloud, "has submitted a proposal for a twelve-million-dollar three-year logistics contract. However, an audit completed at ten o'clock this morning by our risk assessment team revealed three critical irregularities."

Evelyn Holloway hurried up behind her son, her silver silk dress rustling loudly. "You malicious little liar!" Evelyn shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at the stage. "You're doing this out of spite because he didn't buy you an expensive ring! Tell them the truth, Grant! Tell them she’s an ungrateful wife who ran away with his children!"

Security guards stepped forward from the perimeter, but Emma raised a single finger, stopping them in their tracks.

"Let her speak, Nathan," Emma said calmly. "Mrs. Evelyn Holloway has spent three years expressing her opinions about my value. It is only fitting she hears mine."

Emma turned her eyes back to the folder.

"Irregularity number one," Emma stated clearly into the microphone. "Holloway Logistics currently owes seven million dollars on a defaulted revolving credit line to Meridian Commercial Bank, which matures at five o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The company possesses less than four hundred thousand dollars in liquid reserves."

A loud, collective gasp rippled through the audience of logistics executives. Vendors began leaning into one another, whispering frantically.

"Irregularity number two," Emma continued, her tone measured and lethal. "Over the past eighteen months, Mr. Grant Holloway has diverted two hundred and eighty thousand dollars of corporate operating capital into personal accounts to fund luxury real estate leases, high-end vehicle rentals, and private gallery sponsorships for Ms. Serena Vale’s interior design firm."

At Table 1, Serena Vale shrank back into her chair, covering her face with her hands as dozens of camera phones turned in her direction.

"And irregularity number three," Emma said, closing the leather binder with a sharp snap that echoed through the ballroom. "The CEO of Holloway Logistics lacks basic human character. On Tuesday evening, while his wife was undergoing an emergency surgical procedure to save the lives of his premature twin children, Mr. Holloway deserted the medical facility to attend a social gathering. A man who abandons his own flesh and blood in a crisis cannot be trusted to safeguard twelve million dollars of corporate assets."

Silence—heavy, suffocating, and total—descended upon the Bellevue Ballroom.

Grant looked around frantically. The executives he had been laughing with twenty minutes ago were now turning their backs, looking away in disgust. The reporters were snapping photos continuously, the flashes blinding him.

"Emma!" Grant screamed, tears finally spilling over his bloodshot eyes. "Emma, I made a mistake! I was stupid! I was confused! Please, for the sake of our family, don't do this! I love you! I’ve always loved you!"

Emma leaned closer to the microphone.

"The contract with Holloway Logistics," Emma announced, "is permanently canceled. Furthermore, Ashford Meridian Group hereby initiates formal legal proceedings to recover all defaulted loan capital, effective immediately."

She stepped back from the podium.

Julian Ashford took the microphone. "Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. This concludes the formal presentation. Refreshments will be served in the foyer."

The stage lights dimmed slightly as Emma turned and walked toward the backstage private exit.

Grant tried to rush the stage, but four massive Ashford security guards blocked his path, grabbing him by his shoulders and forcing him down onto his knees in the middle of the ballroom carpet.

"Emma!" Grant shrieked, his suit jacket ripping at the shoulder seam as he struggled. "Emma! Look at me! Please! Emma!"

Emma stopped at the edge of the backstage curtain. She turned her head slightly, looking back over her shoulder at the man kneeling in the dirt of his own ruined ambition.

"My name is Ms. Ashford," she said softly.

Then she vanished behind the curtain.
