Chapter 4 - The Delusion of Security

In the sunlit garden room of the Holloway mansion in Bryn Mawr, Evelyn Holloway poured tea from a sterling silver pot into a porcelain cup. She was a woman in her late fifties with manicured blond hair, wearing a powder-blue cardigan that cost six hundred dollars—a cardigan bought with money Grant had borrowed from his company's reserve fund.

"Stop pacing, Grant! You're making my head throb," Evelyn snapped, setting the tea pot down with a sharp clink. "It’s a bluff. It has to be a bluff!"

Grant sat on the edge of a floral sofa, his eyes bloodshot, his tie loosened, his hair disheveled. He hadn't slept in thirty-six hours.

"It’s not a bluff, Mom!" Grant shouted, slamming his hand onto the armrest. "The bank froze the account! Seven million dollars! They gave me until Friday! If I don't pay it back, they will seize the trucks, the warehouses, the corporate headquarters—everything!"

"Then we will call the police!" Evelyn insisted, her voice rising in high-pitched indignation. "Emma is a schoolteacher! Her father was a floor manager at an auto plant who died twenty years ago! I remember distinctly when she brought those awful homemade jam jars to Christmas two years ago. A woman from a wealthy family does not bring homemade jam!"

"She brought homemade jam because she knew you liked blackberry, you arrogant idiot!" Grant yelled, putting his head in his hands. "The lawyer was Nathan Brooks! I checked his photo on the Ashford Meridian website! He’s their lead executive officer! He doesn't show up at 3:00 AM to deliver fake divorce papers to a nobody!"

The room fell quiet, save for the ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner.

The heavy oak front door chimed. A moment later, Serena Vale walked into the garden room. She wore a tight cream-colored linen dress, high heels, and held a designer leather tote bag over her arm. Her expression was a mix of dramatic sympathy and calculated concern.

"Grant, darling," Serena cooed, hurrying over to slip her arm around his shoulders. "I came as soon as I heard. Your mother called me. Is it true? Has Emma really gone mad?"

Grant looked up at Serena. For the first time in three years, the sight of her perfect makeup and artfully styled hair didn't bring him a sense of executive pride. It brought him a sudden, uncomfortable surge of nausea.

"She’s not mad, Serena," Grant said raspy. "She’s an Ashford."

Serena gasped, her hand fluttering to her throat. "An Ashford? As in... the Ashford Meridian Group? The people who own the building my gallery leases?"

"Yes!" Grant groaned.

Serena’s eyes flickered with a strange, rapid calculation before she smoothed her features back into concern. "Well... even if she is rich, Grant, she can't just take your company! You’re her husband! You have marital rights to her inheritance!"

"He’s right!" Evelyn chimed in, leaning forward with sudden energy. "Pennsylvania is an equitable distribution state! If she has billions, Grant, you are entitled to half of everything she inherited during the marriage!"

A tiny ray of desperate hope flared in Grant’s chest. He looked between his mother and Serena. "Half? You think... you think I could get half?"

"Of course!" Serena declared, leaning down to kiss his cheek. "And my uncle says that if you file an emergency petition for parental alienation, alleging that she took the children out of state without your written permission, a judge will freeze her personal accounts until the custody dispute is settled!"

"Yes!" Evelyn clapped her hands together. "We will turn this around on her! She thought she could intimidate us with high-priced lawyers, but we have the moral high ground! She abandoned her husband! She took your children in the middle of the night!"

Grant pulled himself up straight. The color began to return to his pale cheeks. The terror that had gripped him since the hospital corridor was slowly replaced by a familiar, ugly arrogance.

"You're right," Grant said, adjusting his collar. "She played a game with me. She pretended to be poor to trick me into a marriage, then she ran away because she couldn't handle me spending time with Serena. The judge will see right through her."

His phone chimed with an incoming email notification.

Grant pulled it out. The subject line read: CONFIRMATION OF SIGNING CEREMONY — NORTH AMERICAN RETAIL CORP & HOLLOWAY LOGISTICS.

Grant let out a long, triumphant breath. "It's the contract renewal from North American Retail. Twelve million dollars over three years. The signing is at the Bellevue Hotel tomorrow at noon."

"Twelve million!" Evelyn gasped, smiling broadly. "See? The business is thriving! Once we secure that contract, the bank will have to negotiate an extension on the loan line!"

"And my firm is handling the floral design for the VIP tables at the Bellevue!" Serena squealed, hugging Grant tightly. "I’ll make sure your head table has the grandest orchid arrangement in the room, darling. We will walk in there together, show everyone that Holloway Logistics is rock-solid, and then we will deal with Emma and her lawyers!"

Grant looked down at his phone screen. The doubt was gone. He smiled—a cold, self-assured smirk that reflected off the dark glass of the display.

"Emma wanted to play executive," Grant said softly. "Let's see how she handles herself when I walk out of that hotel with a twelve-million-dollar deal in my pocket."
