CHAPTER 2: THE MORNING THE HAWTHORNES LOST EVERYTHING

Ryan Hawthorne didn't sleep.

Not really.

He spent the entire night pacing through the mansion.

The storm had finally passed.

But another storm was coming.

One far more dangerous.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the same image.

Elara.

Sitting in the snow.

Holding their newborn twins.

And standing beside her—

Alexander Blackwood.

The man who could destroy entire corporations with a single phone call.

The man Ryan had spent years trying to impress.

The man who, until tonight, he never realized was his father-in-law.

The realization haunted him.

Because if Alexander truly wanted revenge...

the Hawthorne family wasn't prepared.

Not even close.

At exactly 5:47 a.m., Ryan's phone rang.

The caller ID displayed one name.

Michael Grant.

Chief Financial Officer.

Ryan answered immediately.

"Michael?"

The voice on the other end sounded panicked.

Not worried.

Panicked.

"Ryan, where are you?"

"I'm home."

"You need to get to headquarters right now."

Ryan's stomach tightened.

"Why?"

Silence.

Then:

"Everything's collapsing."

The words hit like a hammer.

Ryan grabbed his coat.

"What happened?"

Michael's voice shook.

"Our primary investors are pulling out."

Ryan froze.

"What?"

"Three major firms withdrew funding overnight."

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Much smaller.

Michael continued.

"And that's not all."

Ryan already knew.

There was always more.

"There are rumors spreading through the market."

"What rumors?"

Another pause.

Then:

"That Blackwood Capital is ending all partnerships with us."

Ryan stopped breathing.

No.

That couldn't happen.

Not Blackwood Capital.

Anyone but them.

Nearly forty percent of the company's expansion projects depended on Blackwood financing.

Without it—

Disaster.

Absolute disaster.

Ryan rushed toward the door.

His heart pounding.

Then another voice interrupted him.

Patricia.

She stood at the top of the staircase.

Still wearing her silk robe.

"What happened?"

Ryan looked pale.

"The company."

Patricia frowned.

"What about it?"

Ryan's answer made her face go white.

"I think we're under attack."

By 7:15 a.m., Hawthorne Holdings headquarters looked like a disaster zone.

Executives rushed through hallways.

Phones rang nonstop.

Assistants cried.

Lawyers argued.

Stock analysts crowded conference rooms.

Nobody appeared calm.

Nobody appeared confident.

The atmosphere felt like a sinking ship.

Ryan entered the executive floor.

Immediately Michael approached him.

A stack of documents in his hands.

His expression was grim.

"Look."

Ryan grabbed the papers.

And felt his stomach drop.

More investors gone.

More funding withdrawn.

More contracts suspended.

The numbers were catastrophic.

Hundreds of millions.

Vanishing overnight.

"How?"

Michael laughed bitterly.

"You already know how."

Ryan did.

Everyone did.

Alexander Blackwood.

The most powerful financial figure connected to the company.

And now its most dangerous enemy.

The conference room doors suddenly opened.

The board members had arrived.

Every seat quickly filled.

Nobody smiled.

Nobody exchanged pleasantries.

The atmosphere felt like a funeral.

Ryan took his place at the head of the table.

Then the chairman cleared his throat.

"We need to discuss the situation."

The words sounded diplomatic.

But Ryan could already sense the hostility.

A director leaned forward.

"Did you really throw Mr. Blackwood's daughter out of your house?"

Silence.

Ryan couldn't answer.

Because the answer was yes.

Another director shook his head.

"My God."

A third director spoke.

"Do you understand what you've done?"

Patricia had always convinced Ryan that Elara was insignificant.

Manipulative.

Replaceable.

Now the board was making something painfully clear.

Elara wasn't insignificant.

She was connected to the most powerful man in the room.

And perhaps the most powerful man in the state.

Ryan suddenly felt very alone.

Then the doors opened.

Again.

Everyone turned.

The room froze.

Alexander Blackwood entered.

The silence became absolute.

He wasn't supposed to be there.

Yet somehow his presence felt inevitable.

Like fate arriving to collect a debt.

Alexander walked calmly toward the conference table.

A team of attorneys followed behind him.

So did several financial advisors.

The chairman stood immediately.

Respect.

Fear.

Possibly both.

Alexander sat down.

Then looked directly at Ryan.

No anger.

No shouting.

No threats.

Just disappointment.

And somehow that felt worse.

Much worse.

Finally Alexander spoke.

"Good morning."

Nobody answered.

He placed a folder on the table.

Then slid it forward.

Toward Ryan.

"Open it."

Ryan hesitated.

Then obeyed.

The contents made his blood run cold.

Legal agreements.

Investment contracts.

Ownership structures.

Financial guarantees.

Dozens of them.

Ryan looked up.

Confused.

Alexander remained calm.

"Read page seven."

Ryan flipped through the document.

Found page seven.

Then stared.

His face instantly lost color.

Because for the first time, he understood the truth.

A truth his father had hidden for years.

A truth Patricia never wanted anyone to know.

Hawthorne Holdings wasn't truly independent.

Not even close.

Alexander Blackwood quietly controlled the debt.

The infrastructure financing.

The overseas partnerships.

The expansion capital.

Nearly everything.

Ryan looked up slowly.

"Impossible."

Alexander's expression never changed.

"No."

His voice remained steady.

"Very possible."

The room sat in stunned silence.

Alexander continued.

"For twenty years your family pretended to own an empire."

Another pause.

"In reality..."

He leaned forward.

"...I allowed you to manage one."

The words struck like lightning.

Patricia nearly collapsed into her chair.

Ryan couldn't breathe.

The company.

The prestige.

The influence.

Everything suddenly felt fragile.

Temporary.

Borrowed.

Alexander folded his hands.

"And now that arrangement is over."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Then Ryan asked the question that mattered.

"What do you want?"

For the first time, emotion appeared in Alexander's eyes.

Not anger.

Not greed.

Pain.

The pain of a father.

The pain of a grandfather.

The pain of a man who had watched his daughter suffer.

He answered quietly.

"I want my family protected."

The room remained still.

Alexander looked directly at Ryan.

"You abandoned your wife."

Another pause.

"You abandoned your children."

Another pause.

"And worst of all..."

His voice hardened.

"...you allowed someone else's hatred to become your judgment."

Ryan immediately knew who he meant.

Patricia.

His mother.

The woman whose influence poisoned everything.

The realization hurt.

Because it was true.

Every word.

Every accusation.

Every mistake.

True.

Then Alexander revealed something nobody expected.

"There's one more thing."

The room became silent again.

Alexander opened another folder.

This one thinner.

Older.

More personal.

Ryan frowned.

"What is that?"

Alexander slowly pushed it across the table.

"Proof."

"Proof of what?"

Alexander's eyes darkened.

"The thing Elara never told you."

Ryan opened the folder.

The first page contained a medical report.

Then another.

Then another.

His confusion quickly became shock.

And then horror.

Because the documents revealed a secret Elara had protected for years.

A secret she never wanted anyone to know.

Years before meeting Ryan...

Elara had nearly died.

A serious accident.

Multiple surgeries.

Months of rehabilitation.

Doctors had delivered devastating news.

She would likely never have children.

The odds were almost impossible.

Ryan stared at the pages.

Unable to process them.

Alexander continued.

"When she became pregnant with your twins..."

His voice softened.

"...she called it a miracle."

The room became silent.

Ryan felt tears forming.

The twins.

Those babies.

The children he had failed to protect.

The children Elara believed she might never have.

Alexander looked away briefly.

Even he struggled with the memory.

"She spent years praying for a family."

Ryan closed his eyes.

The guilt became unbearable.

Every accusation.

Every argument.

Every moment he failed her.

Crushed him.

Then Alexander delivered the final blow.

"Last night..."

His voice lowered.

"...you threw her miracle into the snow."

Nobody spoke.

Nobody could.

Because there was nothing left to say.

That evening, Ryan sat alone in his office.

The building felt empty.

Silent.

Defeated.

Outside the windows, the city lights glowed in the darkness.

His phone remained motionless on the desk.

No calls.

No messages.

No support.

For the first time in his life, he understood exactly what he had lost.

Not the company.

Not the money.

Not the status.

Elara.

The twins.

His family.

Then the office television suddenly interrupted regular programming.

Breaking news.

The anchor looked serious.

"Hawthorne Holdings faces major uncertainty after reports of leadership changes and investor withdrawals."

Ryan looked away.

He couldn't watch.

Not anymore.

Then his phone vibrated.

A single message appeared.

From an unknown number.

There was no text.

Only a photograph.

Ryan opened it.

And instantly felt tears fill his eyes.

The image showed Elara.

Holding the twins.

Both babies sleeping peacefully.

For the first time in months...

she looked happy.

Safe.

Protected.

Loved.

Ryan stared at the photograph for a long time.

Then noticed something written beneath it.

A single sentence.

No signature.

No explanation.

Just words.

"You never realized her worth until someone else reminded you."

Ryan lowered the phone.

Heartbroken.

Because the sentence was true.

And because he suddenly understood something terrifying.

Alexander Blackwood wasn't finished.

Not even close.

The empire was still falling.

More secrets were still hidden.

And the biggest betrayal of all...

May you like

was about to come from inside the Hawthorne family itself.
