CHAPTER 1: THE CALL THAT SHOOK AN EMPIRE

Snow fell harder with every passing minute.

The wind howled across the sprawling estate like a living thing.

On the frozen marble steps of the Hawthorne mansion sat Elara.

Barely three weeks after giving birth.

Wrapped in a thin coat.

Holding two newborn twins against her chest.

Trying desperately to keep them warm.

Inside the mansion, golden light spilled through enormous windows.

Warmth.

Luxury.

Comfort.

Everything she had been denied.

Ryan Hawthorne stood beside the fireplace.

A glass of expensive whiskey in his hand.

His mother Patricia sat nearby.

Neither appeared concerned.

Neither appeared guilty.

In fact, Patricia looked pleased.

"She'll come crawling back eventually."

Ryan stared into the fire.

Silent.

Patricia smirked.

"They always do."

Outside, Elara's hands trembled violently.

Not from fear.

From exhaustion.

From heartbreak.

From the crushing realization that the family she sacrificed everything for had abandoned her and their children.

One of the twins began crying.

Then the other.

The sound pierced the storm.

Elara looked down.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Her voice broke.

"I'm so sorry."

Then she reached into her pocket.

Pulled out her phone.

And made a call.

The number had been saved for years.

A number she swore she would never use.

Not unless absolutely necessary.

The phone rang once.

Twice.

Then a man's voice answered.

Calm.

Powerful.

Dangerous.

"Elara."

She closed her eyes.

The sound of his voice instantly brought tears.

"It's me."

"I know."

The man paused.

Then his tone changed.

"What's wrong?"

Elara looked at her sleeping children.

Then toward the mansion.

Toward the people who had destroyed her life.

"They threw us out."

Silence.

A terrible silence.

Then:

"Who?"

The single word carried enough weight to make grown men nervous.

Elara swallowed.

"Ryan."

Another silence.

Longer this time.

Colder.

The man finally spoke.

"Where are you?"

"Outside the Hawthorne estate."

"With the babies?"

"Yes."

The line went completely quiet.

No response.

No questions.

No emotion.

And somehow that scared Elara more.

Because she knew exactly what that silence meant.

The man was angry.

Very angry.

When he finally spoke again, his voice was ice.

"Stay where you are."

Then he hung up.

Inside the mansion, Patricia laughed.

A servant had just informed her that Elara was still outside.

Still sitting in the snow.

Still refusing to leave.

"Pathetic."

She sipped her tea.

Ryan remained silent.

Something felt wrong.

A strange discomfort lingered in his chest.

He glanced toward the window.

For a brief moment he could see Elara holding the babies.

The image disturbed him.

More than he wanted to admit.

Patricia noticed.

"Don't start feeling guilty."

Ryan looked away.

"She's their mother."

Patricia rolled her eyes.

"She's a manipulator."

"Mom—"

"She's after the family fortune."

The familiar accusation filled the room.

The same accusation Patricia had repeated for years.

The same accusation that slowly poisoned Ryan's marriage.

The same accusation that ultimately destroyed his trust in Elara.

Patricia stood.

Walked toward the window.

And smiled.

"She'll learn her place."

Then the sound came.

A distant rumble.

At first nobody noticed.

But it grew louder.

And louder.

And louder.

Ryan frowned.

"What is that?"

The rumble became deafening.

Engines.

Multiple engines.

Approaching rapidly.

The entire household turned toward the front gates.

Then headlights appeared.

Dozens of them.

Cutting through the snowstorm.

Patricia's smile vanished.

Luxury black SUVs rolled toward the mansion.

One after another.

Then another.

Then another.

The convoy seemed endless.

Security guards rushed outside.

Confused.

Nervous.

Ryan stepped onto the front porch.

Snow blasted against his face.

The lead vehicle stopped directly in front of the estate.

The engine died.

The door opened.

And a man stepped out.

Tall.

Silver-haired.

Impeccably dressed despite the storm.

His presence alone changed the atmosphere.

Even before anyone spoke.

Everyone felt it.

Power.

Real power.

The kind that doesn't need to announce itself.

The kind that owns the room before entering it.

The man walked straight past Ryan.

Ignoring him completely.

Ignoring Patricia.

Ignoring everyone.

His attention focused on only one person.

Elara.

The moment he saw her sitting in the snow with the twins, his expression darkened.

Dangerously.

He immediately removed his cashmere coat.

Knelt beside her.

And carefully wrapped it around her shoulders.

Then he looked at the babies.

His eyes softened.

For just a second.

"My God."

His voice trembled.

"They're freezing."

Elara lowered her head.

"I'm sorry."

The man gently touched her shoulder.

"No."

His gaze shifted toward the mansion.

Toward Ryan.

Toward Patricia.

And suddenly the softness vanished.

Completely.

"What happened here?"

Patricia stepped forward.

Trying to regain control.

"Excuse me, who exactly are you?"

The man didn't even look at her.

One of the men from the convoy answered instead.

His voice firm.

Professional.

Respected.

"That's Mr. Alexander Blackwood."

The world stopped.

Ryan froze.

Patricia froze.

Even the security guards froze.

Because everyone knew that name.

Alexander Blackwood.

The billionaire investor.

The financial kingmaker.

The man whose companies controlled billions.

The man who financed half of Hawthorne Holdings.

The man whose signature could save or destroy corporations overnight.

Patricia's face turned white.

"No..."

Ryan stared in disbelief.

Because there was only one question.

Why was Alexander Blackwood here?

Then Alexander answered it himself.

He looked directly at Elara.

Then at the twins.

And finally at Ryan.

His voice thundered across the estate.

"Because she is my daughter."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

The storm itself seemed to stop.

Ryan felt his knees weaken.

Patricia's tea cup slipped from her hand.

Shattering against the marble.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Alexander Blackwood continued.

"The woman you threw into the snow tonight..."

His eyes burned with fury.

"...is my only child."

Ryan's blood turned cold.

Patricia looked ready to faint.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The confidence.

The education.

The grace.

The quiet strength Elara always carried.

It hadn't come from nowhere.

She wasn't a gold digger.

She had been wealthy long before meeting Ryan.

In fact...

she came from a family far richer than theirs.

Alexander slowly stood.

Towering.

Terrifying.

The snow swirled around him.

His next words shattered what remained of the Hawthorne family's world.

"I gave you my daughter."

His voice shook with rage.

"I trusted you with my grandchildren."

Another step forward.

"And tonight..."

Another step.

"...you made the biggest mistake of your lives."

Ryan finally found his voice.

"Sir, I can explain—"

"No."

Alexander cut him off instantly.

"You've already explained."

He pointed toward Elara.

Toward the babies.

Toward the snow-covered steps.

"The evidence is sitting right there."

Patricia tried speaking.

"Mr. Blackwood, this is a misunderstanding—"

Again.

"No."

The single word felt like a death sentence.

Alexander reached into his pocket.

Removed his phone.

Then placed a call.

A very short call.

Three sentences.

That was all.

Yet by the time he ended it, the future of the Hawthorne empire had already changed.

Because somewhere across the city...

banks were receiving instructions.

Lawyers were receiving instructions.

Investors were receiving instructions.

And before sunrise...

the Hawthorne family would discover something terrifying.

They had never truly owned their empire.

They had merely borrowed it.

And Alexander Blackwood was about to take it back.
