Chapter 9 - The Choice for the Future

Two years after the night of sixty pastel balloons, Clara and I stood on the back terrace of my Great Falls home.

The leaves were turning rich shades of crimson and gold across the Virginia hills. Clara was leaning back against my chest, her hands resting over mine as we watched the sunset stain the sky in shades of violet and orange.

"I talked to the adoption director at the agency today," Clara said quietly, her voice warm against the crisp evening air. "The file for the open adoption program has been approved. They have a matched profile for a newborn due in November."

I squeezed her hands gently, feeling a deep, profound warmth spread through my chest—a feeling entirely foreign to the cold survival instincts that had dominated my life during my illness and the legal battles that followed.

"A boy or a girl?" I asked softly.

"A baby girl," Clara smiled, turning in my arms to look up at me. "Her biological mother is a senior pre-med student who wants her child raised by people who understand what it means to build a real, loving home."

I looked down at Clara—at her honest eyes, her absolute integrity, and the quiet, immovable strength she brought into my life every single day.

"When do we meet her?" I asked.

"Next Tuesday," Clara said, resting her head against my chest. "Are you ready to be a father, Brad?"

I thought back to the dining room in Bethesda—to the champagne flutes, the custom cake, the manipulation, and the desperate attempt to trap me into a life built on lies. Then I looked around at my home, at the life I had rebuilt with my own hands, my own honor, and the unwavering truth.

"I’ve been ready for a long time," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "I just needed to make sure the door was open for the right family."
