Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Bennetts

The fallout from the leak and the regulatory reports unfolded like a series of controlled demolitions.
On Monday morning, officials from the Maryland Attorney General's Office served Ricky Bennett with a formal freeze on his business accounts, pending an investigation into fraudulent securities offerings and misapplication of investor funds.
Ricky’s real estate firm collapsed overnight. His private investors—many of whom were wealthy friends of Frank and Denise—realized their money was gone. Panicked and furious, they turned their legal sights on Frank Bennett, who had signed as a guarantor on several of Ricky’s private promissory notes.
At 2:00 PM on Tuesday, Frank’s accounting firm issued a brief, cold press release: Frank Bennett had been placed on indefinite administrative leave pending an internal review of professional ethics and personal financial liability.
The Bennett family home in Bethesda, where the champagne had flowed and sixty pastel balloons had floated just two weeks prior, was listed for emergency sale at a heavily discounted price to pay off impending legal settlements.
I watched all of this unfold from a distance, feeling neither joy nor sadness—only the quiet relief of a surgical operation successfully completed.
However, the real confrontation was yet to come.
On Thursday evening, as rain slicked the streets of Arlington, my phone rang. It was Anthony.
"Brad?" Anthony’s voice was breathless, panicked. "You need to come down to the clinic on 14th Street. Right now."
"What’s wrong?" I asked, putting down my coffee.
"Rachel is here. She... she’s refusing to go through with the court-ordered prenatal paternity draw. Her mom is here, shouting at the nurses, saying the court order is invalid. Rachel says if she’s forced to do this, she’s going to leave the state and go to Florida where her aunt lives."
"Is her lawyer there?"
"No! Eugene dumped them yesterday after Frank couldn't pay his retainer! Brad, if she leaves the state, this legal fight will drag on for years. I just want to know if this baby is mine so I can prepare!"
"I'm on my way," I said.
When I arrived at the medical clinic twenty minutes later, the waiting room was in chaos. Denise was pacing back and forth near the reception desk, her face red and blotchy, screaming at a tired clinic administrator. Rachel was sitting in a corner chair, her hands wrapped tightly around her stomach, looking smaller and more defeated than I had ever seen her. Anthony was standing near the door, holding a thick folder of court documents provided by Valeria’s associate.
The moment Denise saw me walk through the glass doors, her eyes burned with psychotic rage. She marched straight toward me, raising her hand as if to slap me.
"You!" she shrieked. "You ruined my family! You ruined my son’s business! You ruined my husband’s career! You sociopath!"
I didn't step back. I stood six-foot-two, composed, calm, and entirely unimpressed.
"Denise," I said, my voice echoing off the tile walls. "If your hand touches my face, the police officer sitting in the squad car outside this window will have you in handcuffs within thirty seconds. Do you want to spend the night in central booking next to actual criminals?"
Denise froze, her hand trembling in mid-air. She looked out the glass doors and saw the flashing yellow lights of a parking enforcement unit, but in her panicked state, she believed me. She slowly lowered her arm, her shoulder shaking with choked rage.
"You destroyed us," she whimpered.
"No," I replied, stepping past her toward Rachel. "You destroyed yourselves when you decided that honor, honesty, and law were optional for your family."
I stood over Rachel. She slowly looked up at me. The smug, manipulative girl who had stood under those pastel balloons was gone. In her place was a terrified twenty-six-year-old woman facing the terrifying, unvarnished reality of her choices.
"Rachel," I said quietly.
"Are you happy now, Brad?" she asked, her voice cracking. "Is this what you wanted? Everyone hates me. My dad is broke. My brother is facing criminal charges. Are you satisfied?"
"I never wanted any of this," I said honestly. "I wanted a quiet life with a woman I trusted. I wanted to build a company, enjoy my health after surviving cancer, and move forward. You brought war into my life because you thought I was too soft to fight back."
"I was scared," she sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "I was so scared when I found out I was pregnant. Anthony didn't have anything... and you had everything..."
"And that is why you fail as a human being," I said coldly. "You treat people like transactions. You looked at Anthony as a biological mistake, and you looked at me as an insurance policy. But a human life isn't an insurance policy. And that baby inside you isn't a bargaining chip."
I pointed toward the inner office door where a phlebotomist was waiting with a collection kit.
"Walk through that door," I ordered her. "Give the blood sample. Let Anthony get his paternity test. Stop running from the consequences of your life, Rachel. Because if you board a plane to Florida tonight, Valeria will have a federal warrant for interference with custody jurisdiction served on you before your flight lands in Orlando."
Rachel looked at me, realizing there were no more moves left on the board. No more lies, no more balloon parties, no more crying performances.
She slowly stood up, wiped her tears with the back of her hand, and walked through the door into the lab.
Anthony stepped up beside me, watching her go. He let out a long, heavy sigh.

"Thank you, Brad," Anthony said quietly. "I don't know why you did all this for a guy who slept with your girlfriend."
"I didn't do it for you," I said, putting a hand on his shoulder. "I did it for the kid. That child is going to have a rough enough life with her as a mother. They’re going to need at least one parent who lives in reality."
