Chapter 9 - The Sentence

The trial didn't even need to go to a full jury.

Faced with Taylor’s comprehensive confession—complete with years of written diary entries, text messages, and corroborating psychological notes detailing Evelyn’s abusive control—the prosecution offered a plea deal.

In exchange for testifying fully against her mother and pleading guilty to lesser charges of reckless endangerment and failure to protect a minor, Taylor received a sentence of five years, with three years suspended and two years served in a minimum-security correctional facility, followed by mandatory psychological rehabilitation and supervised probation.

Evelyn, however, refused all plea deals.

Her trial lasted four days. The prosecution presented the chilling audio recording from my driveway, the medical reports from Lily’s hypothermia treatment, testimony from child psychologists, and Taylor’s damning testimony detailing years of systematic psychological and physical torture inflicted upon her own daughter and granddaughter.

When the jury returned with their verdict after only two hours of deliberation, the foreman’s voice rang clear across the silent courtroom:

“Guilty on all counts, Your Honor.”

Sentencing took place a month later.

Judge Henderson looked down from the bench at Evelyn, who stood in her orange jumpsuit, still wearing an expression of unrepentant arrogance.

“Evelyn Vance,” the judge said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “You used your intelligence, your social standing, and your manipulation to systematically abuse and torture a helpless six-year-old child—your own granddaughter. You are a predator hiding behind a facade of respectability.”

The judge slammed his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack.

“I sentence you to twenty-five years in state prison, with no possibility of parole for fifteen years.”

Evelyn didn't scream this time. She simply stared straight ahead, her face turning chalk-white as the bailiffs snapped the steel handcuffs onto her wrists and led her away through the heavy wooden doors.

Justice had finally been served.
