Chapter 5 - The Raid on Aspen Ridge Lane

While Lily slept peacefully under the care of a night nurse, Detective Vance invited me to ride along in an unmarked police cruiser as local units executed the arrest warrants on Aspen Ridge Lane.

It was 2:30 a.m. when we pulled onto Aspen Ridge Lane.

Three police cruisers sat parked outside the house, their blue and red emergency lights casting an eerie, flashing strobe across the manicured lawns and brick facades of the neighborhood.

As we walked up the driveway, the front door opened. Two uniformed officers escorted Evelyn and Taylor out onto the porch in handcuffs.

Evelyn looked unrecognizable. Her hair was messy, her designer coat thrown hurriedly over a silk nightgown, and her face twisted in a mask of furious indignation.

“This is an outrage!” Evelyn shrieked, trying to twist away from the officers. “Do you know who my husband was? Do you know who I am? I am a pillar of this community! You can't treat me like a common criminal!”

Taylor walked behind her, sobbing hysterically, hiding her face behind her cuffed hands. When she spotted me standing beside Detective Vance near the hood of the cruiser, her crying turned to pleading.

“Lucas! Lucas, please!” Taylor cried out, stumbling forward. “Tell them to stop! It was Mother’s idea! I was scared of her too! Lucas, please, don't let them take me away from my baby!”

I stopped three feet away from her. The woman I had loved for seven years—the woman I had trusted with my entire life—looked pathetic, small, and entirely hollow.

“You watched her lock our daughter in a freezer, Taylor,” I said, my voice dead and cold. “And you chose your mother over your own flesh and blood. You don't get to call yourself a mother ever again.”

Taylor collapsed onto the driveway, wailing into the cold asphalt as the officers lifted her up and guided her into the back of the transport van.

Evelyn stared at me with pure, unadulterated venom as she was pushed into the second cruiser. “You think you’ve won, Lucas? This family will destroy you. We will take everything you have left.”

“The only thing you’re going to take,” Detective Vance said smoothly, shutting the cruiser door, “is a long, hard look at concrete walls.”

As the police vans drove away into the dark Colorado night, I stood alone on the driveway of the house that had once been my home, feeling the cold wind brush against my face—not with fear anymore, but with the crisp promise of a brand-new dawn.
