Chapter 5 - The Senator’s Shield

By 2:30 a.m., Senator Victoria Hale was sitting in the study of her gated estate in the wealthy enclave of Oakridge, sipping herbal tea while looking over the latest polling numbers for her gubernatorial campaign.
She was a sharp, striking woman in her early fifties, known for her iron-fisted control over state politics and her ruthless ability to bury scandals.
Her phone buzzed on the mahogany desk.
She picked it up, expecting it to be her campaign manager. "I told you not to call me after midnight unless the polling numbers in the fourth district dropped below fifty—"
"Victoria," a panicked, gasping voice cut in over the receiver. It was Arthur Cole, the billionaire construction mogul.
Senator Hale frowned, setting her tea down. "Arthur? Why are you calling me from an unencrypted line?"
"Ethan... Ethan is in the trauma center!" Arthur sobbed, his usual arrogant demeanor completely shattered. "Someone attacked the VIP room! They took out six armed guards in thirty seconds! Ethan’s jaw... God, Victoria, his jaw is wired shut! The doctors say his face is destroyed!"
Senator Hale stood up, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Who did it? Was it a cartel hit? A rival firm?"
"No! It was the girl’s father!"
"The girl?" Senator Hale paused, her mind racing. "The girl Brandon knocked around at the university tonight?"
"Yes! He left a message with Whitmore’s kid! He called himself... he called himself The Ghost!"
Senator Hale felt a sudden, ice-cold chill drop straight into her stomach. Her hand froze around the phone.
As a high-ranking state official who had served on the judiciary committee for twenty years, she knew the classified files. She knew the urban legends that slept beneath the foundations of the East Coast political machine. She remembered the late 1990s, when three corrupt state supreme court justices and an entire division of crooked federal agents had vanished overnight without leaving a single drop of blood behind.
"The Ghost..." she whispered, her voice losing all its political warmth. "Arthur... tell me Brandon wasn't involved in the attack on his daughter."
"Brandon was there!" Arthur yelled. "He's the one who used the bat! Victoria, what do we do?! My boy is in surgery!"
"Listen to me very carefully, Arthur," Senator Hale commanded, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Gather your personal security team. Lock down your house. Do not call the local police—half of them will abandon you if they realize who is hunting us. I am calling Chief Vance right now to deploy the state tactical unit to my estate."
She hung up the phone, her hands trembling as she dialed the direct line for Chief Donald Vance.
"Chief Vance," she snapped the moment the call connected. "Activate Contingency Zero. I need a full tactical cordon around the Hale estate immediately. We have an ultra-high-level threat—"
The lights in her study suddenly flickered once... twice... and died.
The heavy silence of the house settled over her like a shroud.
"Chief?" she said into the receiver.
Static answered her. Then, the line went completely dead.
Senator Hale slowly lowered the phone. She reached into her desk drawer, pulling out a small, silver-plated .38 revolver. She cocked the hammer, holding the weapon in front of her as she moved toward the heavy oak doors of her study.
"Brandon!" she called out into the dark hallway. "Brandon, get down here right now!"
No answer.
She stepped into the hallway. The grand chandelier in the foyer was unlit. The four private security guards she paid ten thousand dollars a month to patrol her grounds were nowhere to be seen.

Then, a deep, raspy voice echoed from the shadows of the velvet armchair near the fireplace.
"He can't hear you, Senator."
