Chapter 4 - An Eye for a Jaw

Ethan’s heavy body crashed onto the floor, scattering glasses and ice buckets.
He tried to scramble backward, but I drove my leather boot down onto his right knee.
CRUNCH.
A horrifying shriek tore from Ethan’s throat as his kneecap shattered under my heel. He rolled onto his side, weeping, clutching his leg. "My leg! God, my leg! You broke my leg!"
Tyler Whitmore threw himself onto his knees, his hands held high, sobbing hysterically. "Please! Please, sir! I didn't hit her! I swear to God I didn't hit her! I just recorded it! Brandon and Ethan did it! Don't kill me!"
I turned to Tyler. I pulled his phone from his trembling hands, unlocked it, and watched the video of my daughter one more time.
Then I crushed the phone in my gloved fist, snapping the circuit board in half, and dropped the pieces onto Tyler’s face.
"Marcus," I said.
Marcus stepped forward, throwing a heavy leather duffel bag onto the table. He unzipped it, revealing three medical toolkits, titanium wiring, and a set of heavy steel pliers.
Ethan looked up through his tears, his face white as paper. "What... what are you going to do?"
"My daughter’s jaw was shattered in six places," I said, pulling off my gloves and rolling up my sleeves. "The doctor said it took immense force. He said whoever did it wanted to leave a permanent reminder."
I knelt beside Ethan Cole. He tried to punch me with his right fist, but I caught his wrist, twisted it until his elbow popped, and pinned his head against the cold marble floor with my knee.
"No! Please! My dad will pay you! How much do you want?! Ten million?! Twenty million?!" Ethan screamed.
"Your father doesn't have enough money in his empire to buy back what you stole from my daughter tonight," I whispered into his ear.
I grabbed his jaw.
What happened next over the next three minutes in that darkened VIP lounge was not done out of wild rage. It was done with surgical, terrifying precision. Every punch, every crushing blow was calculated to match the exact structural damage shown on Lily's hospital X-rays.
When I stood up, Ethan Cole was lying in a pool of his own blood, unconscious, his jaw broken in precisely six places, wired shut with the very same medical wire his father’s money had paid for.
He would live. But he would never eat solid food comfortably again. He would never speak clearly again. And every time he looked in the mirror for the rest of his life, he would remember the name Daniel Walker.
I turned my head toward Tyler Whitmore.
Tyler was hyperventilating, pressing himself against the leather booth, wet tears soaking his shirt.
"I’m letting you live, Tyler," I said softly. "Because someone needs to deliver a message to Senator Hale and Arthur Cole."
Tyler nodded frantically, his head bobbing like a broken toy. "Anything! I’ll tell them whatever you want!"
"Tell them," I said, leaning down until my face was an inch from his, "that The Ghost has returned to the city. Tell them to call off their police dogs. Tell them to pull their legal petitions. And tell them that if Brandon Hale isn't sitting on the steps of the city courthouse by sunrise with a full confession... I will tear their world down to the foundation."
I walked toward the exit.
"Marcus," I said as we stepped out onto the rain-slicked roof. "Call Victor. Tell him to get the second package ready."
May you like
"Where are we going, Boss?"
"To the state capitol," I said, looking out over the glittering skyline. "It's time to speak to the Senator."
