Chapter 6 - BLOOD AND STEEL

The storm over the Lombardy plains was fierce, rain driving down in sheets that blurred the neon lights of the Milan skyline.

A sleek, black glass tower rose fifty stories into the stormy sky: the global headquarters of Vance Logistics. Inside the top-floor executive suite, Julian Vance sat in an expensive leather armchair, staring out at the rain-slicked city.

At seventy-one, Julian looked like a monarch whose kingdom was crumbling around his ears. His face was gaunt from months of chemotherapy, his skin yellowed and papery, yet his dark eyes burned with an unholy, stubborn intensity.

A tall, impeccably dressed lawyer stepped into the office, carrying a leather briefcase.

"The board members have all arrived, Mr. Vance," the lawyer said, bowing his head slightly. "They are gathered in the main auditorium on the 45th floor. The vote to liquidate the legacy trusts and transfer the twelve billion into the Panamanian holding entities is scheduled for 10:00 AM."

Julian picked up a glass of crystal water, his hand trembling slightly. "And the problem in Tuscany?"

The lawyer hesitated. "The strike team failed, sir. The location was defended. Three men were captured. Arthur and... the woman... have vanished into the northern transport network."

Julian slammed his glass onto the mahogany desk, shattering the crystal. Water spilled across the polished wood.

"Idiots!" Julian hissed, his voice raspy and choked with rage. "You were given a simple task! She is a seventy-year-old beggar! How does a woman who ate out of garbage cans for twenty years defeat professional operatives?"

"She was not just a beggar, Julian," a calm, chilling voice echoed through the room's intercom system.

Julian went dead silent. The blood drained from his pale face.

The executive office doors clicked open.

Arthur Vance walked in first, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his expression cold, unyielding, and iron-firm. Behind him came Matteo and two private security officers.

And behind Arthur stepped Clara Vance.

She did not wear rags, nor did she look like the ghost of the Piazza del Campidoglio. She wore a tailored midnight-blue silk coat, her silver hair pulled back into an elegant knot at the crown of her head. Around her neck hung a simple strand of pearls—the very pearls Constantine had given her forty years ago, retrieved from the family safehouse.

Julian staggered back against his desk, his hands clutching the edge of the wood for support. His chest heaved as if he were suffocating.

"Clara..." Julian choked out, his eyes wide with a horrific mix of fear and disbelief. "It... it isn't possible. I watched you burn..."

"You watched a car burn, Julian," Clara said, stepping forward, her heels clicking crisply on the hardwood floor. "You were always sloppy. You assumed that fear would keep me in the dark forever. You thought that by threatening my son, you had chained me to the gutter."

"Security!" Julian shrieked, reaching for the panic button beneath his desk. "Security! Get in here!"

Arthur stepped forward and calmly placed his hand over the panic console, ripping the wiring directly out of the wood.

"The security team on this floor belongs to the original family charter, Uncle Julian," Arthur said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "They answer to the Chairman. And according to company bylaws, until the board votes, the true Chairman’s widow holds executive veto power."

"She has no power!" Julian spat, a line of bloody saliva running down his chin as he coughed violently. "She is a ghost! Legally dead for twenty-four years! You cannot resurrect a dead woman in a court of law!"

"I am not here for a court of law, Julian," Clara said quietly, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a heavy, encrypted black flash drive—retrieved from the Lugano bank vault by Matteo's team three hours prior. "I am here for the board meeting."

Julian stared at the drive. His eyes filled with absolute terror. "Where did you get that?"

"Constantine was always three steps ahead of you," Clara said softly. "This drive contains every wire transfer, every fraudulent shipping manifest, and every order you gave to sever my brake lines twenty-four years ago. It is already mirrored to the Swiss Federal Prosecutor’s office and the Italian Financial Police."

Julian collapsed back into his chair, his body shivering uncontrollably. The illusion of his invincible empire had shattered into dust in less than two minutes.

"You ruined me..." Julian whimpered, looking up at her with hollow, sunken eyes. "I built this company into a global giant! Constantine was weak! He was too soft for this world!"

"My husband was honorable," Clara said, looking down at the dying man with a mixture of pity and absolute disdain. "And honor survives long after cowards rot."

She turned to Arthur. "Take him to the board. Let the shareholders see what remains of the man who tried to steal our family."
