Chapter 5 - WHISPERS IN THE DARK

The heavily armored SUVs didn't cruise down the driveway; they tore through the wooden gates of the estate, spraying splintered timber and gravel into the morning air.

Inside the villa’s basement hideaway, behind a reinforced steel door concealed behind a wine rack, Julianna held the three girls close. The basement was quiet except for the muffled thud of footsteps on the floorboards above and the sharp, tactical comms radio Arthur had left behind.

On the ground floor, Arthur stood behind the marble kitchen island, a semi-automatic pistol held firmly in his hands. Beside him stood Matteo and two trusted private guards.

"They aren't police," Matteo whispered, peering through a slit in the shuttered window. "Contractors. Ex-special forces from the East. Julian paid top dollar for this strike team."

"Do not shoot to kill unless necessary," Arthur ordered, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "We need survivors to testify."

"They won't leave survivors to take a stand, Arthur," Clara’s voice came from the shadowed hallway behind them. She held an old, heavy iron fireplace poker in her right hand, her posture as balanced and grounded as a veteran soldier’s. "Julian wants a clean slate. Once we are dead, the story will be an unfortunate gas explosion."

CRASH.

The front oak doors were blown inward by a localized breach charge. Plaster dust exploded into the foyer in a choking white cloud.

Tactical flashlights sliced through the haze as four armed men in black gear flooded the entry hall.

"Sweep the rooms! Target alpha is the old woman!" a voice barked in English.

"Now!" Matteo yelled, firing two suppression shots into the wall above the lead mercenary's head.

The hallway erupted into noise. The deafening roar of gunshots shook the ancient villa. Matteo and his guard traded fire with the intruders, forcing two mercenaries back toward the doorway.

Arthur moved to cover the hallway leading to the basement stairs. A hulking mercenary rounded the corner, his rifle raised. Before the man could acquire his target, Clara stepped out from the shadows behind him with horrifying precision.

With a sharp, fluid movement born of survival in the unforgiving back alleys of European cities, Clara swung the iron poker, striking the mercenary precisely behind the knee. The man cried out, his leg giving way. As he collapsed, Clara brought the heavy iron handle down onto his wrist, forcing him to drop the rifle.

Arthur jumped forward, driving his shoulder into the mercenary’s chest, tackling him to the floor and securing the weapon.

"You've picked up some skills, Mother," Arthur panted, pinning the mercenary down.

"The streets of Naples teach you leverage, my son," Clara said smoothly, her breath barely elevated. "Clear the foyer!"

Outside, the second wave of attackers was advancing up the steps, but Matteo threw a flashbang canister through the shattered window. The light-and-sound grenade detonated with a blinding flash, disorienting the remaining operatives on the porch.

"Retreat! Fall back to the cars!" the team leader shouted outside, realizing their element of surprise was gone and the villa’s defense was far heavier than reported.

Within ninety seconds, the roar of SUV engines signaled the retreat. The mercenaries sped down the olive grove path, leaving behind two injured operatives groaning on the foyer floor.

Arthur rushed to the basement door and punched in the security code. The steel door slid open, revealing Julianna holding the triplets.

The three girls didn't cry. Mia looked up from her mother’s lap, her small blue eyes locking onto Clara, who stood in the doorway covered in plaster dust, holding the iron rod.

"Nonna won," Mia said simply, clapping her tiny hands together.

"We won this round," Arthur corrected, wiping sweat and gunpowder residue from his forehead. "But Julian knows exactly where we are now. We have less than twelve hours before he mobilizes local law enforcement under his payroll."

Clara walked over to the captured mercenary lying on the marble floor. She knelt beside him, pulling back his tactical vest to reveal a tattooed emblem on his shoulder—a stylized crest of the Vance Maritime Security Division.

"He used company security," Clara said, her eyes narrowing. "Which means Julian is panicking. He’s cutting corners. He’s using assets directly tied to his name."

She looked at Arthur, her voice dropping to a harsh, decisive command.

"We don't go to Lugano for the key’s vault," Clara declared. "We go straight to Milan tonight. We strike him while his guard is down."
