Chapter 4 - The Collapse

The ballroom was so quiet you could hear the soft hum of the air conditioning system.

Lucas could not breathe. He stared at the woman sitting across from him—the woman whose hair he had stroked last night while she fell asleep, the woman who had made him breakfast in their kitchen, the woman his family had treated like dirt for four long years.

"Natalie..." Lucas rasped out, his voice barely audible.

"Chairwoman Carter," Marcus Vance corrected loudly from beside her, his voice cutting through the room like a blade. "Mr. Harrington, you will address the Chief Executive with her proper title."

Eleanor grabbed the edge of the table, her face flushed with a mixture of rage, embarrassment, and sheer panic. "This is a joke. This is an absolute farce! Lucas, what is she doing? How did she get those clothes? Who paid for this performance?"

Natalie didn't flinch. She simply turned her gaze toward Arthur Pendelton, the Harrington family lawyer, who was trembling so violently he could barely hold his pen.

"Mr. Pendelton," Natalie said calmly. "Did you explain to your clients who holds the voting rights for the master land lease at Palm Beach International Airport?"

Pendelton swallowed hard, his voice squeaking. "I... Mrs. Harrington, Horizon Aero... Horizon Aero is the sole owner of the airfield, the terminal rights, and the regional utility grid for the entire coastal district. They... they own forty-nine percent of the joint venture, but they hold a hundred percent of the operational veto power."

"What?" Eleanor snapped, turning on Pendelton. "You told me we were equal partners!"

"Equal in investment, Mrs. Harrington," Natalie said, picking up a gold fountain pen from the table and uncapping it with a quiet click. "Not in authority. Four years ago, when your company was on the verge of insolvency after the European market crash, my late father secretly injected three hundred million dollars into Harrington Coastal through an anonymous holding firm. He did it because he believed in Lucas’s vision for the company."

Natalie looked at Lucas, her eyes filled with a deep, sorrowful disappointment.

"My father believed Lucas was a man of integrity. A man who built things up rather than tearing people down. So he gave Horizon the right to terminate the resort lease at any time if Harrington Coastal underwent a change in leadership that threatened our corporate values."

"Corporate values?" Eleanor screeched, standing up from her chair and pointing a manicured finger at Natalie. "You think you can play games with us because you hid behind your father's money? You lied to my son! You pretended to be a nobody!"

"I never lied," Natalie said softly, her voice carrying an unmistakable weight. "Lucas asked me where I worked when we met at the airport. I told him I worked for Horizon Aero in customer service. That was the truth. He never asked what my last name was, because every time I tried to talk to him about my family, you interrupted us to remind me that my background didn't matter."

She turned her gaze to the audience, where the board members of Harrington Coastal were sitting in total horror.

"At 5:40 this morning," Natalie continued, "Mrs. Eleanor Harrington submitted an unauthorized amendment to our master contract. She attempted to shift one hundred and ten million dollars of financial liability onto Horizon Aero while retaining all retail revenue for herself."

The crowd erupted into furious murmurs. Several key investors sitting in the front row turned to glare at Eleanor.

"That amendment," Natalie said, sliding the paper across the mahogany table toward Eleanor, "is a direct violation of Section 9 of our master agreement. It constitutes bad-faith negotiation and fraud."

"Natalie, please," Lucas begged, standing up and reaching across the table. "Please... let us talk about this in private. I didn't know about the 5:40 AM amendment! My mother did that without the board's consent!"

"You didn't know?" Natalie asked, raising a single eyebrow. "You were standing right beside her at the terminal when she boasted about protecting the company, Lucas. You signed off on your own silence when you let her hit me and stepped onto that plane."

Lucas flinched as if he had been physically struck.

Natalie picked up the second document on the table—a crisp white page stamped with the official seal of the state of Florida.

"As Chairwoman of Horizon Aero," Natalie announced, her voice echoing clearly through the hall, "I am officially canceling the Palm Beach Resort joint venture with Harrington Coastal Group, effective immediately."

Gasps echoed through the room.

"Furthermore," Natalie added, "Horizon Aero is calling in the three hundred million dollar debt note issued four years ago. You have forty-eight hours to clear the full balance, or we will begin foreclosure proceedings on Harrington Coastal's corporate assets."

"You can't do this!" Eleanor screamed, slamming her hands on the table. "You will destroy us!"

Natalie stood up gracefully, smoothing her ivory jacket. She looked down at Eleanor with absolute, terrifying calm.

"You told me this morning that there was no place for me in your family," Natalie said softly. "You were right, Eleanor. Because your family is bankrupt."

Natalie turned on her heel and walked off the stage.
