Chapter 3 - Red Carpets and Cold Truths

The Palm Beach Executive Airport was bathed in brilliant Florida sunlight. The palm trees swayed gently in the warm ocean breeze as the Harrington private jet rolled to a stop outside the private terminal.

On the tarmac, a fleet of three black Mercedes-Maybachs waited, surrounded by security personnel and local news crews. The grand opening of the Harrington Coastal Resort was the event of the season, a two-billion-dollar luxury development that promised to transform the coastline.

Eleanor stepped out of the aircraft first, smiling broadly for the camera flashes. Brooke followed close behind, posing on the stairs, while Lucas walked down slowly, his eyes scanning the crowd. Deep down, a small, desperate part of him hoped to see Natalie waiting near the gates, having somehow caught an early commercial flight.

She wasn't there.

"Mr. Harrington! Over here!" a reporter shouted. "Is it true the board will confirm your presidency during the Horizon signing today?"

Lucas offered a forced, stiff smile and nodded once before being ushered into the back of the lead Maybach by his security detail.

Twenty minutes later, the convoy pulled up to the Grand Ballroom of the Palm Beach International Convention Center. Inside, over three hundred high-society guests, institutional investors, state senators, and board members were sipping mimosas beneath crystal chandeliers.

At the center of the room stood a massive architectural model of the resort, complete with miniature private docks, luxury shopping avenues, and a dedicated Horizon Aero helipad.

"Look at this, Lucas," Eleanor whispered, touching his arm as they walked through the crowd. "This is your legacy. This is what you almost compromised for a girl who used to check luggage for six hundred dollars a week."

"Mother, please," Lucas muttered.

Brooke walked over, holding two champagne glasses. "Uncle Thomas and the rest of the board members are in the VIP lounge. They want to review your acceptance speech before the 1:00 PM ceremony."

Lucas walked toward the lounge, feeling as though he were walking toward an execution rather than a promotion. Every time he looked at his hands, he remembered holding Natalie's hands in their small apartment when they were first married, promising her that one day he would stand on his own two feet.

At 12:45 PM, the ballroom doors opened wide, and a hush fell over the room.

Four tall, burly men in dark suits carrying earpieces entered the room, clearing a wide path toward the main stage. Behind them walked six executives in navy suits, led by Marcus Vance and Sarah Jenkins.

"That's Horizon's executive team," Arthur Pendelton whispered to Eleanor, pulling at his collar. "They've arrived."

Eleanor stepped forward, putting on her most regal, welcoming smile. She walked toward Sarah Jenkins with her hand extended.

"Ms. Jenkins! Welcome to Palm Beach," Eleanor said smoothly. "I am Eleanor Harrington. This is my son, Lucas, our incoming president. We are thrilled to finalize our historic partnership today."

Sarah Jenkins didn't take Eleanor’s hand. She paused, looking at Eleanor with a cool, professional stare.

"Mrs. Harrington," Sarah said flatly. "Please save your greeting for the Chairwoman."

Eleanor’s hand hovered in the air for a second before she dropped it, her smile faltering slightly. "Of course. Where is the Chairwoman? We were told she would be arriving with your party."

"She is right behind us," Marcus Vance said, checking his watch. "And I suggest you take your seats at the signing table."

The crowd gathered around the high stage at the front of the room. On the stage stood a long mahogany table with two gold pens resting on leather folders. Lucas took his seat on the left side of the table, with Eleanor and Arthur Pendelton sitting beside him. Across from them, three seats remained empty.

The room fell completely silent as the heavy oak double doors at the back of the hall swung open.

The clicking of high heels echoed off the marble floor.

A woman walked into the ballroom, flanked by four senior Horizon directors. She wore a tailored ivory silk suit, a gold Cartier watch, and a breathtaking diamond pendant that caught the light of the chandeliers. Her dark hair was styled in soft, elegant waves, and her posture exuded an effortless, unshakeable power.

The crowd gasped. Several board members from Harrington Coastal stood up in shock.

Lucas felt the blood drain from his face so fast he thought he might pass out. His hands gripped the edge of the table so hard his knuckles turned white.

"No..." Brooke whispered from the front row, dropping her champagne glass. It shattered against the tile floor. "No, that's... that's impossible."

Eleanor froze, her eyes wide, her mouth opening slightly in sheer disbelief.

Natalie Carter walked down the red carpet, her eyes fixed entirely on the people sitting at the stage. She did not look like the woman who had stood in a department-store coat under the gray sky of Greenwich three hours ago. She looked like royalty.

She climbed the stairs to the stage, the heavy silk of her trousers sweeping gracefully with every step. Marcus Vance pulled out the center leather chair at the table for her.

Natalie sat down, folded her hands on the table, and looked directly across at Lucas and Eleanor.

The microphone in front of her clicked on, her voice echoing clearly through the three hundred speakers in the ballroom.

"Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen," Natalie said, her tone smooth, icy, and entirely composed. "I am Natalie Carter, Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of Horizon Aero."

She paused, letting the silence crush the room, before her eyes landed squarely on Eleanor Harrington's pale face.

"And it seems we have some business to settle."
