Chapter 9 - The Ice and the Fire

The northern cliffs were a desolate expanse of black rock and jagged ice, the wind off the ocean roaring like a wounded beast. When Elena arrived, the manor’s three security guards were desperately trying to use iron bars to leverage a massive, frost-covered pine tree off Alexander’s leg.
Alexander lay against the frozen earth, his face deathly pale, his lips blue, his hands covered in scraped dirt and ice where he had tried to claw his way out. His right trouser leg was torn, exposed to the elements, the skin beneath heavily bruised and twisted at an unnatural angle.
When he saw her running down the steep slope, his gray eyes opened slightly, a flash of absolute panic crossing his frozen features. "Elena... no... go back. It's too slippery... you'll fall..."
She didn't listen. She hit the frozen mud beside him, ignoring the rocks cutting into her knees. She pulled her heavy wool scarf off her neck and wrapped it tightly around his frozen face, her hands trembling as she felt the dangerous, erratic pulse in his neck.
"Shut up, Alexander," she sobbed, her tears freezing on her cheeks. "You are an idiot. You are the biggest idiot in this city."
"The bars aren't catching, Miss Elena!" the head security guard shouted over the wind. "The mud is too slick! We can't get the leverage!"
Elena looked at the massive trunk, then looked at the new refrigerated delivery van she had driven up the mountain path. She sprinted back to the vehicle, grabbed the heavy industrial tow chains from the rear cabin, and dragged them down the slope.
With a strength she didn't know she possessed, she crawled beneath the frozen branches, looping the heavy steel links around the center of the log, securing the other end to the van's reinforced chassis.
"Get in the driver's seat!" she yelled to the guard. "Reverse it! Now!"

The engine roared, the tires spinning on the ice before finally catching traction. The heavy chains went taut, groaning under the tension, and with a massive, sickening crack, the pine tree was dragged off Alexander's leg.
Elena lunged forward, wrapping her arms around his torso, pulling his heavy frame against her chest to share her warmth as the distant sirens of the rescue choppers finally began to echo over the ocean.
