Chapter 7 - The Silent Protection

Following the broadcast, the public narrative inverted instantly. The city fell in love with Elena’s quiet dignity, and the Sterling and Dupont families were thoroughly ostracized from high-society events overnight. The vultures had been driven back into their cages by Alexander's absolute submission on live television.

But Alexander didn't use his newfound public sympathy to corner Elena. He kept his distance, respecting the separation she had requested.

However, his protection was everywhere.

When the bakery's old delivery van broke down on a rainy Tuesday morning, a brand-new, top-of-the-line refrigerated transport vehicle arrived at the shop two hours later. The delivery driver simply handed Elena’s father the keys, stating that the lease had been paid in full for the next fifty years by an anonymous logistics firm.

When the local city council attempted to increase the commercial property taxes on the lower district block where the bakery stood—a move designed to push out small businesses for luxury developments—Whitman Holdings quietly purchased the entire municipal debt of the district, freezing all commercial rent and tax rates permanently.

Elena saw his hand in everything. She saw it in the private security guards who walked the perimeter of her street to keep the remaining paparazzi away. She saw it in the fresh flowers that appeared on the street corner every morning.

"He is trying to buy his way back into your heart, Elena," her brother remarked one afternoon as they loaded fresh loaves into the new van.

"No," Elena said softly, looking at the smooth leather of the steering wheel. "When Alexander wants to buy something, he sends a lawyer with a contract. This... this is a man standing in the rain, making sure the water doesn't touch me. He isn't buying anything. He's serving."
