Chapter 7 - The Masterpiece of Justice

Eight months later, the Federal District Court of New York hosted a landmark civil forfeiture hearing that marked the formal conclusion of the historic Cole-Sterling corporate liquidation case.
As the court-appointed primary receiver, I was requested to give expert testimony regarding the final distribution of over $150 million in recovered assets that Ethan and Bianca had attempted to hide in offshore accounts.
The courtroom was filled to capacity with financial journalists, legal experts, and former employees of Cole Holdings who had lost their pensions when Ethan crashed the firm.
Marcus sat in the front row, holding my hand until the bailiff called my name.
I walked up to the witness stand with poise, wearing a crisp navy-blue tailored suit. I carried no notes—every transaction, every digital signature, and every shell account was permanently engraved in my mind.
"Ms. Bennett," the presiding magistrate judge began, looking down with deep respect. "The court has reviewed your final distribution framework. You have structured the recovered $150 million to fully restore the lost employee pension funds, clear all outstanding vendor debts, and donate the remaining $25 million in surplus fraud fines directly to victim restitution programs."
"That is correct, Your Honor," I stated, my voice echoing clearly throughout the courtroom. "The individuals who built the real value of Cole Holdings were the working-class employees, engineers, and support staff. They were innocent bystanders to corporate greed. This settlement ensures they are made 100% whole."
A wave of emotional applause broke out across the gallery. Former administrative staff and senior technicians who had faced financial ruin five years ago wiped away tears, looking at me with immense gratitude.
After the hearing adjourned, a crowd of reporters surrounded me on the marble steps of the courthouse. Microphones were held out from every angle.
"Ms. Bennett! Ms. Bennett!" a reporter from Bloomberg called out. "Five years ago, Ethan Cole claimed you were an unhinged liability who understood nothing about his empire. Today, you saved thousands of families from financial ruin using his seized assets. What is your response to him?"
I looked directly into the camera lens, my expression serene and calm.
"Empire is built on truth, integrity, and labor," I said softly. "When you build on lies and cruelty, it isn't an empire—it’s just a trap you set for yourself. I hope he uses his time to reflect on that truth."
Without waiting for further questions, I stepped down the stairs into the warm afternoon sun, where Marcus was waiting with the car door open.

As we drove away from the courthouse, Marcus reached across the leather seat and held my hand. "That was brilliant, Claire. You didn't just balance the ledger; you redefined it."
"I’m ready to close that chapter completely, Marcus," I replied, looking out at the city skyline. "The past has been audited and cleared. Now, it’s time to live our future."
