Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Past

While our lives flourished in the light, the walls were closing in on those who had tried to build their fortune on deceit.

In the state correctional facility in Upstate New York, Bianca Sterling sat in a cold visitor’s booth behind thick safety glass. Her once-famous golden hair was cut short and plain, and her designer dresses had long been replaced by a coarse denim uniform.

Her father, former energy tycoon Richard Sterling, sat on the opposite side of the glass. He looked frail, aged by decades in a few short years, wearing an inexpensive suit that hung loosely on his diminished frame.

"Father," Bianca hissed, her voice sharp with desperation. "Tell me the appeal went through. Tell me the board reinstated your pension!"

Richard looked at his daughter with eyes filled with hollow exhaustion. He slowly shook his head.

"There is nothing left, Bianca," Richard muttered softly. "The civil lawsuits from the former investors of Sterling Global Energy cleared out our personal trusts. The estate in the Hamptons was auctioned by the bankruptcy court last Monday."

"What about Ethan?!" she demanded, her nails digging into the plastic counter. "He promised his legal team had backup funds in Zurich! He promised he would take care of us!"

Richard let out a bitter, dry laugh. "Ethan Cole is broke, Bianca. His own legal team withdrew from his appeal case two weeks ago because he couldn't pay their retainer. He’s working in the prison library for ninety cents an hour."

Bianca stared at her father, her breath catching in her throat as the final illusion of her former life completely shattered. She had sacrificed her reputation, her freedom, and her family’s legacy for a man who was nothing more than a charlatan wrapped in a expensive suit.

Meanwhile, in the federal correctional institution in Pennsylvania, Ethan Cole sat at a cold steel table in the common room. A copy of the Financial Times lay open before him.

On page four was a prominent feature article titled: "The New Standard of Corporate Integrity: How Claire Bennett Transformed Forensic Auditing."

The article featured a stunning photograph of me standing on the glass balcony of Bennett Consulting’s high-rise headquarters, surrounded by my senior executive team. The article detailed our firm’s recent $500 million merger-audit contract with European regulatory authorities and highlighted the foundation’s work in protecting vulnerable families.

Ethan’s hands shook uncontrollably as he read every word.

He recalled the night he had called me on speakerphone during his rehearsal dinner, laughing alongside his groomsmen, treating me like an insignificant obstacle he could easily sweep away. He remembered screaming at me in the hospital, threatening to use his vast wealth to take my child away.

Now, he had no wealth, no freedom, no legacy, and no family.

The mother of the child he had abandoned was now recognized globally as one of the most powerful financial minds of her generation. And he was just a prisoner, forgotten by the world he had worked so hard to deceive.

He slowly closed the newspaper, buried his face in his rough hands, and wept silently in the cold, unfeeling light of the prison hall.
