Chapter 6 - The Trial in the Dark

The three young men were bound securely to heavy steel chairs in the center of the penthouse living room, their hands zip-tied behind their backs, their faces pale with sheer, unadulterated terror.

Major Bishop stepped out from the shadows of the hallway, carrying a heavy metallic briefcase. He set it down on the glass coffee table before David, popping the latches with a crisp click. Inside were three high-resolution medical photographs printed on thick glossy paper.

Nora’s X-rays. Her bruised, swollen face. The wired jaw.

David picked up one of the photographs, his thumb tracing the edge of the image where his daughter's face had been fractured in six places. He didn't look at the boys immediately. He just stared at the photograph, the silence in the room stretching like a taut wire ready to snap.

"Do you know what it feels like," David began, his voice dangerously quiet, "to spend nineteen years teaching your daughter to be kind? To teach her that the world has beauty, that people are fundamentally decent, and that if you work hard, you can achieve anything?"

Chad Jr. sobbed, tears streaming down his face. "I'm sorry! I swear, we were just drinking! We didn't mean to—"

"Shut up!" David snapped, his voice cracking like a whip.

Chad snapped his mouth shut, whimpering.

"You didn't break her jaw because you were drunk," David said, stepping closer, towering over the three bound teenagers. "You broke her jaw because you believed your names made you gods. You believed that human life had a price tag, and that as long as your fathers had enough zeroes in their bank accounts, cruelty had no consequences."

"Please..." Wyatt Holbrook sobbed, wetting his pants in absolute panic. "My dad will give you anything! Just don't kill us!"

"Kill you?" David let out a cold, humorless chuckle. "Killing you would be a mercy. Death is quick. Death is clean. And men like you don't deserve clean endings."

David turned to Major Bishop. "Status on the offshore accounts?"

"Drained and transferred, Commander," Bishop reported crisply. "Every cent of their family trust funds, personal inheritances, and hidden offshore reserves has been completely wiped and redirected to trauma care units and reconstructive surgery centers across the country. Legally, financially, and socially, these three boys do not exist anymore. They have no names, no money, and no family protection."

"Good," David said.

He walked over to the coffee table, picked up a heavy, steel-encased mobile satellite phone, and dialed a ten-digit number. He pressed speakerphone and set it down on the glass.

After one ring, a sharp, authoritative voice answered.

“Federal Bureau of Investigation, Special Operations Division. State your identity and priority code.”

David looked down at the three trembling boys.

"This is Commander David Vance," David said clearly into the microphone. "Task Force Vanguard operational code: Phoenix-Zero. I am transmitting GPS coordinates to a private penthouse in Manhattan."

“Commander... Vance?” The dispatcher’s voice on the other end hesitated, laced with instant shock and historical reverence. “Confirming code... verified. Vanguard is active?”

"Task Force Vanguard has completed its sweep," David said smoothly. "And we have three fugitive suspects wanted for aggravated assault, conspiracy, and violent hate crimes waiting for immediate federal custody. Send transport."

“Transport inbound. ETA four minutes, Commander.”

The line clicked dead.

David looked down at Chad, Brantley, and Wyatt, who were now sobbing uncontrollably, realizing that their wealth, their names, and their power had completely evaporated into thin air.

May you like

"You're going to federal prison," David said quietly. "You will spend the next twenty years reflecting on what it means to be ordinary. You will learn what it feels like to have no voice, no protection, and no way out."

Sirens began to wail in the distance, growing louder by the second as a fleet of unmarked black tactical federal vehicles converged on the building.
