Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Within forty-eight hours, the untouchable elite of the city had been utterly dismantled.

The media was in a state of unprecedented feeding frenzy. Headlines across every major network screamed of massive corporate corruption, bribery scandals, and the sudden, catastrophic collapse of Kensington Construction, Sterling Holdings, and Holbrook Defense Dynamics. Federal marshals had raided estates, seized luxury yachts, and hauled away corporate executives in handcuffs.

Yet, amidst the roaring hurricane of public scandal, the names Kensington Jr., Sterling Jr., and Holbrook Jr. were mysteriously absent from the initial corporate arrests.

They thought they had won.

Hled up in a lavish penthouse apartment owned by a secondary shell company, the three young men were drinking expensive champagne, laughing nervously as they watched news reports of their fathers' empires burning to the ground.

"I don't get it," Chad Jr. slurred, swirling his glass, his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. "My dad's lawyers said the feds only raided the corporate accounts. They didn't touch us. Our trust funds are still sitting pretty in offshore accounts. We're fine!"

"Damn right we're fine," Wyatt Holbrook laughed nervously, though his hands shook as he set his glass down. "My old man always said money talks louder than anything. Who cares if the companies went under? We've still got millions stashed away."

Brantley Jr. stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the Manhattan skyline. A deep, gnawing sense of dread wouldn't leave his stomach. "Did you guys hear about the campus security footage? The police said it wasn't a glitch. Someone wiped it. Completely. Like a ghost touched the servers."

"Relax, Brantley, you're spooked by a dumb scholarship girl," Chad scoffed, pouring another glass. "Some old guy in a hospital tried to stare us down? Big deal. What are they gonna do? Sue us? We're untouchable."

At that exact moment, the penthouse lights flickered once, twice, and then went completely black.

The ambient noise of the city outside seemed to vanish, muffled by a sudden, heavy acoustic dampening field that enveloped the entire floor.

The three young men froze.

"What... what happened to the power?" Wyatt whispered, stumbling back from the window.

"Must be a blown transformer," Chad stammered, pulling out his cell phone. He swiped the screen. No Service. "Damn it, my phone's dead too."

The heavy oak double doors of the penthouse foyer didn't pick a lock. They didn't turn a handle.

They blew inward with a synchronized, muffled thud of magnetic breaching charges.

Smoke billowed into the foyer. Through the haze, four heavy, silent figures stepped into the apartment. They wore matte-black tactical gear, their faces hidden behind reinforced tactical masks, their movements disciplined, terrifying, and absolute.

Chad dropped his champagne glass. It shattered against the marble floor, the golden liquid splashing across his expensive sneakers.

"Who... who are you?!" Chad screamed, backing away until his spine hit the living room wall. "My father is a billionaire! You can't touch us! Call the police!"

The lead operative stepped forward. Even in the dim light, his posture commanded absolute submission. He reached up slowly, unbuckling his tactical helmet and removing it.

David Vance stepped into the faint moonlight filtering through the glass.

His face was an expressionless mask of iron resolve. His eyes locked onto Chad Kensington Jr. with a cold, terrifying intensity that made the young man's knees turn to water.

"You..." Chad whispered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak as memory flashed back to the dark alleyway behind the campus where he and his friends had cornered a terrified, defenseless girl. "You're... you're the girl's father."

"I am," David said softly, his voice echoing in the dead silence of the penthouse.
