Chapter 6 - The Courtroom Battle
The Cook County Family Courtroom was packed with reporters, attorneys, and spectators when the custody hearing opened the following Monday morning.
Diana Harlo sat at the plaintiff’s table, dressed in a conservative navy suit, dabbing fake tears from her eyes with a lace handkerchief. Beside her sat Richard Sterling—a slick, expensive attorney with a reputation for winning unwinnable custody disputes.
Across the aisle sat Riker Steel, wearing a crisp dark suit, flanked by Bernard Holt.
In the center row behind Riker sat Mrs. Higgins, quietly holding Owen and Lily’s hands. The children wore neat gray suits and yellow dresses, looking small and sweet amid the intimidating court proceedings.
Judge Evelyn Vance—no relation to Victor Vance, but a notoriously strict, no-nonsense senior magistrate—presided over the bench.
“Mr. Sterling, you may present your opening argument,” Judge Vance declared, adjusting her spectacles.
Sterling stood up smoothly, buttoning his jacket. “Your Honor, this is a tragic case of intimidation and illegal child abduction. My client, Diana Harlo, was grieving the sudden death of her beloved husband when she suffered an emotional breakdown at O’Hare airport. Before she could return for her children, Mr. Riker Steel—a man known across this city for ruthless corporate tactics and criminal associations—used physical threats to force her to sign away her parental rights.”
Sterling turned to face Riker, pointing an accusing finger. “Mr. Steel has no biological relationship to these children. He is an unmarried man with a dark history. Allowing him to retain physical custody of these vulnerable orphans is a grave danger to their well-being!”
A murmur rippled through the gallery.
Judge Vance looked over her glasses at Bernard Holt. “Mr. Holt?”
Bernard stood up calmly, adjusting his papers. “Your Honor, Mr. Sterling’s narrative is a complete fantasy designed to hide a heinous crime.”
Bernard turned on a large digital screen in the courtroom.
“We submit into evidence the security camera footage from Gate 17 at O’Hare International Airport,” Bernard declared.
The courtroom video played in high definition. The entire gallery watched in stunned silence as Diana Harlo walked away from the five-year-old twins, handed her ticket to the gate agent, and boarded the flight without looking back once. They watched as Owen clutched his bear and wept silently while the plane pulled away.
And then, they watched Riker Steel drop to his knees before the children, hold out his hand, and lead them safely to the private lounge.

Gasps filled the room. Diana buried her face in her hands as prosecutor after prosecutor shook their heads in disgust.
“My client did not abduct these children, Your Honor,” Bernard stated powerfully. “He saved them when their legal guardian left them like abandoned luggage. And as for Thomas Callahan’s legacy—Thomas Callahan saved Mr. Steel’s life seven years ago. Mr. Steel is fulfilling a sacred debt.”
