Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

The drive back to the Vance Estate was silent, but it was a silence filled with a profound, electric warmth.
The storm had passed, leaving behind a clear, star-lit sky over the Atlantic.
Inside the back of the armored SUV, I sat leaning against Roman’s broad chest, exhausted beyond measure. My crimson dress was torn, my leg throbbed, and my hands were covered in grime, but I had never felt more alive.
Roman’s arms were wrapped tightly around me, holding me against him as if he were afraid I would vanish into thin air if he let go. He kept his face buried in my hair, his heavy chest rising and falling in steady, powerful rhythms.
"You were insane back there," Roman whispered softly into my ear, his voice thick with unsaid emotions.
"I learned from the best," I murmured back, smiling faintly as I traced the fabric of his sleeve.
"When you dropped to your knees in front of Corvo..." Roman shuddered, his arms tightening around my waist. "My heart stopped, Clara. I almost broke the Citadel law and killed every man in that room."
I turned slightly in his lap, looking up into his dark, handsome face. The moonlight through the window caught the bandage on his cheek and the intense, burning devotion in his dark eyes.
"You don't have to protect me from the world anymore, Roman," I whispered, reaching up to touch his face. "We protect each other now."
Roman stared at me, his gray eyes shining with raw vulnerability. He leaned down, resting his forehead against mine.
"I married you because I thought I needed your land, Clara," he confessed, his voice dropping into a raspy, breathtaking whisper. "I thought you were just a quiet girl who would stay out of my way. But tonight... tonight I realized I would burn my entire empire to the ground just to see you smile."
"Roman..." I breathed.
He didn't let me finish. He brought his lips down onto mine in a passionate, deep kiss that erased every lingering memory of blood, fire, and fear. It was a kiss filled with absolute surrender, fierce possession, and unconditional love.
I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, giving myself completely to the man who had turned my nightmare into a kingdom.
When we arrived at the estate, Roman carried me up the grand staircase, past the cleaned ballroom, straight into the master suite.
He set me down gently on the massive king-sized bed covered in soft white silk. He unzipped the ruined crimson dress, sliding it off my shoulders with reverence, taking care not to hurt my bandaged thigh.
He brought a warm, damp towel, sitting beside me on the bed, gently wiping away the soot, dust, and blood from my skin, my arms, and my face.
When he reached my right shoulder, he paused. He set the towel aside and leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss directly onto the winged birthmark.
"The ugliest girl in town," Roman murmured against my skin, a soft, teasing smile on his lips.

I laughed—a light, joyful sound that echoed through the quiet room. "Is that what they called me?"
"They were blind idiots," Roman said, pulling me up into his arms, wrapping the warm duvet around us both. "You are the most breathtaking thing I have ever seen in my life."
