Chapter 10 - The Crown and the Wing

One year later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the lush gardens of the Vance Estate, casting golden light across the soft green lawn.
The scent of lavender and ocean breeze filled the air.
I sat on a velvet lounge chair on the terrace, wearing a light linen sundress, watching Eleanor teach a small, chubby-legged toddler how to pick daisies from the flowerbeds.
My nine-month-old daughter, Sophia, let out a joyful squeal, holding up a yellow dandelion toward Eleanor, her bright blue eyes shining with delight.
Footsteps sounded against the marble, and Roman walked out onto the terrace. He had discarded his suit jacket, wearing only a white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He looked younger, lighter, the cold weight of his past completely erased by the warmth of our family.
He walked over to my chair, leaning down to press a soft kiss to my lips, then dropped to one knee beside me, resting his hand over my hand.
"How is the harbor master doing today?" Roman asked, his dark eyes sparkling with affection.
"The harbor master is tired," I smiled, running my fingers through his dark hair. "Sophia decided that four in the morning was the perfect time to practice her crawling."
Roman chuckled, turning to look at our daughter, who was now attempting to stuff the dandelion into her mouth while Eleanor gently stopped her.
"She’s stubborn," Roman said proudly. "Just like her mother."
"She’s going to rule this city one day," I noted, watching Sophia laugh as Eleanor tickled her stomach.
"She can rule whatever she wants," Roman said softly, turning back to me. He reached out, gently pulling down the strap of my sundress to expose my right shoulder.
There, right beside my winged birthmark, lay a faint, tiny pink mark on my skin—a soft, wing-shaped birthmark that little Sophia had been born with on her own shoulder.
The Valente bloodline was no longer a secret buried in ashes. It was a living, breathing legacy of strength, redemption, and unbreakable love.
Roman reached into his pocket, pulled out the silver pendant, and fastened it securely around my neck. The split crown and the sweeping wings rested right over my heart.
"Do you remember what you said to me on our wedding night?" Roman whispered, leaning in until his lips brushed against my ear.
"I said a lot of things while people were shooting at us," I murmured, smiling.
"You said you stopped following orders when my guests began betting on how quickly I would abandon you," Roman reminded me, his voice thick with deep, eternal devotion. "I want you to know something, Clara."
He looked into my eyes—the dark, stormy gray eyes that had once terrified me, now filled with a love so deep it took my breath away.
"I am never leaving you," Roman promised. "Not in this life, and not in the next."
I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him down into a kiss that tasted of sunshine, ocean breeze, and the sweet promise of forever.
