Chapter 6 - The Foundation of Hope

A year passed.
The old main mansion on the Callaway estate was officially demolished. In its place, the Callaway Family Foundation constructed the "David & Camille Callaway Community Park"—a thirty-acre public sanctuary featuring walking trails, public gardens, and a state-of-the-art educational center for low-income students pursuing degrees in finance and business.
Up on the north ridge, overlooking the rolling green hills of Franklin, stood the new Callaway home.
It was a modern farmhouse built of warm cedar, natural stone, and wide glass windows that let in the golden light of the Tennessee sun. There were no limestone columns, no equestrian cases, and no cold marble corridors.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, the air was filled with the smell of sweet clover and fresh-cut grass.
Camille sat on the wide wooden porch, holding a warm cup of herbal tea. Her silk dress flowed gently around her, accommodating the soft round curve of her seven-month pregnancy.
Andre walked out from the kitchen carrying a plate of warm pecan-praline cookies he had spent the morning baking with his own hands.
He set the plate on the rustic coffee table, sat down beside her on the porch swing, and gently pulled her against his side, resting his hand over her baby bump.
Underneath his hand, a small, strong kick pressed against her belly.
Andre laughed—a light, joyful sound that echoed across the quiet ridge. "He’s active today."
"He knows his father is making cookies," Camille smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder.
"Not just any cookies," Andre said proudly. "The old family recipe. But I reduced the sugar by half, just like you taught me."
Camille looked out over the ridge at the public park below, where families were walking along the trails and children were playing near the fountain.
"Do you ever miss the old house, Andre?" she asked softly.
Andre looked around at the warm cedar porch, at the wind chimes swaying in the gentle breeze, and at the woman sitting beside him holding their unborn son.
"I never lived in that old house, Camille," Andre said gently, kissing her cheek. "I was just a prisoner waiting for someone brave enough to break the lock."
He slipped his hand into hers, their wedding rings touching in the soft afternoon light.
"You gave me my life back," Andre whispered. "You gave me a home. You gave me everything."
Camille smiled, feeling the quiet, unshakeable peace that now filled every corner of their world.

"We gave it to each other, Andre," she said softly.
And as the sun began to set behind the hills, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of gold, rose, and amber, the quiet bride who had buried an empire rested securely in the arms of the man who loved her—knowing that the foundation they had built would stand forever.
