Chapter 4 - THE TRAP IS SET

By noon the following day, the sky over the city was dark with heavy rain clouds.

Audrey sat at her dining room table, dressed in a crisp grey suit she hadn't worn since her days working as an architectural designer before Poppy was born. Beside her sat David Miller—a sharp, gray-haired family law attorney who had spent twenty years tearing through high-conflict probate fraud cases.

On the table sat three neat folders, a small recording device, and a certified copy of the bank transfer confirming Audrey’s sole ownership of the property.

At 1:15 PM, a sleek black town car pulled into the driveway.

Margaret stepped out first, wearing a dark blue suit, holding an umbrella over her head with absolute posture. Behind her came Chloe, looking visibly exhausted, her arms wrapped around her stomach as if trying to shield herself from the cold wind. Behind them walked Richard Vance—Chloe’s father, a prominent local developer who had funded Grant’s early business ventures.

Audrey opened the front door before they could even reach the porch steps.

"You brought an audience, Margaret," Audrey said coldly, stepping back to let them into the foyer.

Margaret walked in, her heels clicking sharp and loud against the wood floor. "Richard is here as a material witness to this settlement, Audrey. We are here to receive the ledger and sign the mutual non-disclosure agreement. Let’s get this over with."

Richard Vance looked around the bright hallway, his face unreadable. "Audrey, I’m sorry it’s come to this. But Chloe’s child needs to be provided for. Grant made promises—"

"Grant made promises to a lot of people, Mr. Vance," Audrey interrupted, gesturing toward the dining room. "Please, sit down."

Margaret didn't sit. She remained standing at the head of the table, pulling a leather folder from her bag. "We don't need small talk. I have the non-prosecution agreement drafted by my attorney. You surrender Grant’s private hard drives, you renounce any claim on the Cayman trust on behalf of the adopted child, and in exchange, the Vanguard files are erased."

David Miller leaned back in his chair, taking a sip of his water, a small, dangerous smile touching his lips. "Mrs. Bennett, my name is David Miller. I represent Audrey and her daughter, Poppy Bennett."

Margaret’s eyes narrowed. "I told you no lawyers, Audrey—"

"You don't get to set the rules anymore, Margaret," Audrey said, her voice ringing clear through the spacious room. She picked up the top folder and slid it across the table toward Richard Vance. "Mr. Vance, before you allow your family to be dragged into a federal conspiracy case, I suggest you read page three."

Richard frowned, picking up the folder. Chloe leaned over his shoulder, her eyes scanning the typed document.

"What is this?" Richard asked, his brow furrowing deeper.

"That is a certified forensic transcript of Grant Bennett’s private computer backups," David Miller explained smoothly. "Along with three distinct audio files recorded between Grant and his mother over the last eighteen months."

Margaret’s face went ghastly white. "You... you’re bluffing. He deleted those files—"

"Grant was paranoid, Margaret," Audrey said, leaning forward, resting her elbows on the table. "He kept backups of everything, including the moment you suggested forging my signature on the Vanguard shell accounts to cover his tax evasion."

Richard stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back an inch. "Margaret! What the hell is she talking about? You told me Vanguard was a legitimate investment entity!"

"Richard, shut up and let me handle this!" Margaret hissed, her voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and fear.

"I’m afraid Mr. Vance has reason to be concerned," David Miller continued calmly. "Because Vanguard Holdings was used to funnel funds directly from Mr. Vance’s development firm under the guise of 'consulting fees.' It was an illegal kickback scheme. And Margaret Bennett was taking a fifteen percent management fee on every transaction."

Chloe let out a sharp cry, her hands flying to her mouth. "Dad... what is he saying? Is Grant’s mother stealing from you?"

"She was stealing from everyone, Chloe," Audrey said, her eyes fixed directly on Margaret’s trembling form. "She used Grant to siphon money from your father’s business, she used Grant to launder money through my name, and when Grant died, she tried to strip Poppy’s adoption trust to cover her own tracks before the IRS audited the accounts."

"That money belongs to the Bennett bloodline!" Margaret screamed, dropping her polite demeanor entirely, her face contorting into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. "That adopted brat is nothing! She’s a street child you dragged into this family to cover up your own uselessness! My son’s real legacy is sitting right here in Chloe’s stomach!"

"Your son's real legacy," Audrey said softly, standing up slowly, "was a mountain of debt, three active fraud investigations, and a mother who viewed him as nothing more than a bank account."

Audrey pulled a second document from her stack and laid it in front of Chloe.

"What’s this?" Chloe whispered, her voice shaking violently.

"That is the original, un-amended Cayman trust document signed by Grant three years ago," Audrey said gently. "Grant set up that trust specifically for Poppy. He never intended to change it. The draft you saw—the one transferring the money to your baby—was drafted entirely by Margaret three days after Grant died, using a forged power of attorney."

Chloe looked from the paper to Margaret, tears spilling down her cheeks. "You lied to me... You told me Grant wanted me to have everything. You told me Audrey was trying to steal my baby’s birthright!"

"Chloe, don't listen to her!" Margaret shouted, reaching out to grab Chloe’s arm. "She’s twisting everything!"

"Don't touch my daughter!" Richard Vance boomed, stepping sharply between Margaret and Chloe. He looked at Margaret with pure disgust. "We’re done here. The deal with your firm is off. My lawyers will be contacting the grand jury investigator by four o'clock today."

"Richard, wait!" Margaret pleaded, her voice high and desperate as the world she had built brick by brick began to crumble around her feet. "We can settle this! We are family!"

"We are not family," Richard said coldly. He grabbed Chloe’s hand and led her toward the front door. "Come on, Chloe. We’re going home."
