Chapter 3 - THE BURIED LEDGER

Audrey didn't sleep.

By 3:00 AM, the desk in Grant’s office was covered in spread-out files, bank receipts, and cross-referenced tax forms.

Margaret wasn't lying about the shell corporations. Audrey had found three distinct filings under the names Vanguard Holdings, Apex Logistics, and Crestview Estates. On the back of the 2022 corporate resolution forms, Audrey’s name was signed in dark blue ink—a neat, precise imitation of her handwriting that Grant had perfected over years of managing their joint accounts.

If an investigator looked at these pages without context, Audrey looked like a co-conspirator who had quietly authorized the movement of hundreds of thousands of dollars through off-shore channels.

Grant hadn't just cheated on her. He hadn't just planned to leave her for a younger woman. He had constructed a financial bomb and strapped it to Audrey’s back, ensuring that if he ever went down, she would take the blow while his mother swept in to collect the remains.

"Mommy?"

Audrey looked up quickly.

Poppy was standing in the doorway, clutching her faded blue teddy bear, rubbing her eyes with her small fist. Her pink flower clip was gone, her messy brown hair falling over her forehead.

"Sweetheart," Audrey said softly, quickly folding a folder over the financial documents. "Why are you up? Did you have a bad dream?"

Poppy dragged her feet across the hardwood floor and sat in the large leather chair beside Audrey, pulling her knees up to her chest.

"I heard voices in the kitchen," Poppy whispered softly. "Was it Grandma?"

Audrey felt a sharp pang in her chest. She reached out and smoothed her daughter’s hair back. "It was. But she’s gone now."

"Is she mad at us because I’m not real?"

The question was so quiet, so devoid of anger, that it broke Audrey’s heart into a thousand pieces. She got down on her knees in front of the chair, taking Poppy’s small hands in her own.

"Look at me, Poppy," Audrey commanded gently, waiting until her daughter’s dark brown eyes met hers. "You are my real daughter. You were born in a hospital three miles from here, and the second I held you in my arms, you became my whole world. Your father loved you. I love you. No piece of paper, no bitter old woman, and no unborn baby will ever change that. Do you hear me?"

Poppy nodded slowly, her bottom lip trembling. "Grandma said Daddy’s real baby gets his name. She said I was just... borrowed."

Audrey squeezed her hands tight, fighting back the rage that threatened to spill over. "Grandma is wrong. And I am going to prove it to her."

She tucked Poppy back into bed, sitting beside her until the little girl’s breathing turned heavy and rhythmic.

When Audrey returned to the office at 4:30 AM, her exhaustion was gone. She pulled up Grant’s old desktop computer, plugged in an external hard drive she had found in his safe, and began searching through his local backups.

If Grant was as meticulous as she knew he was, he wouldn't have trusted Margaret completely either. Grant was a narcissist who covered his own tail against everyone—including his mother.

At 5:45 AM, as the first grey light of dawn filtered through the office blinds, Audrey found what she was looking for.

Hidden inside an encrypted zip file disguised as a printer driver backup was an audio recording folder labeled M_Bennett_ConVERSATIONS_2023.

Audrey clicked play on the first file.

The clear, unmistakable voice of Margaret Bennett filled the small room through Audrey’s headphones:

“...you make sure the trust for the adopted girl is funded on paper so Audrey doesn't ask questions during the divorce prep, Grant. Once the child’s adoption records are unsealed through my contact at the county office, we flag the missing social background check. The court will freeze the asset pool. That leaves the entire Cayman sum clear for us to transfer into the new trust once Chloe delivers.”

Then Grant’s voice, cool and indifferent:

“What about Audrey’s signature on the Vanguard filings?”

“She’ll sign whatever you put in front of her, Grant. She trusts you. And if she gets difficult when you bring Chloe into the picture, the Vanguard debt hangs over her head. She won't dare fight for custody or property if she’s facing federal indictment.”

Audrey leaned back in her chair, a long, deep breath expanding her chest.

It was all there. The conspiracy to invalidate Poppy’s adoption, the deliberate forgery on the shell corporation taxes, and the extortion scheme planned by both Grant and Margaret.

Margaret hadn't come to the house to destroy Audrey. She had come out of pure desperation, knowing that if Audrey ever unlocked this computer, the entire Bennett family legacy would be wiped out in a single court hearing.

Audrey picked up her phone, dialed a number, and waited.

"Hello? Legal Aid and Family Law, this is David’s office."

"David," Audrey said, her voice like cold steel. "It’s Audrey Bennett. I need you to file an emergency injunction and a subpoena for Margaret Bennett and Chloe Vance. I have the evidence."
