Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

The days following Luke’s arrest were a blur of legal battles, medical treatments, and overwhelming realization. Clara took me to her home—a quiet, sunlit sanctuary in the outskirts of the city. For the first time in almost a decade, I had my own phone, my own space, and freedom.

However, freedom came with the daunting task of piecing together the life Luke had stolen.

While my physical burns began to heal under specialized medical care, the psychological scars ran deep. Every time a door slammed or a kettle whistled, my body went rigid with panic. But Clara was there every step of the way, along with a legal team she had assembled to dismantle the Vance empire.

One afternoon, sitting in Clara’s study, we met with David Sterling, a former federal prosecutor who now specialized in complex criminal defense and asset recovery.

"The case against Luke is strong, Caroline," David explained, laying out a series of legal briefs. "The criminal charges—attempted murder, aggravated assault, and forced termination of pregnancy—are solid. But the Vance family is desperate. They are using every legal loophole to delay the trial."

"What are they planning?" I asked.

"They are trying to declare you mentally incompetent based on your past medical visits," David said gravely. "Luke had you checked into private clinics three times over the last five years. He paid the attending physicians to document that you suffered from severe hysterical psychosis and self-harming tendencies."

I gasped. "I went to those clinics because I was grieving! He told me they were wellness retreats to help me recover from the miscarriages!"

"He was laying a paper trail," Clara said angrily. "He was building a defense years in advance in case you ever spoke out."

"Can we disprove these records?" I asked David, feeling a surge of anxiety.

"We can, but we need hard evidence that these doctors were bribed," David replied. "Specifically, Dr. Richard Hollis, the head of the Crestview Clinic. He signed off on all your psychiatric evaluations. If we can get Hollis to testify that Luke coerced him, the prosecution's case will be ironclad."

"Hollis won't talk easily," Clara noted. "He has his own reputation and license to protect."

"Then we make him talk," I said suddenly.

Both Clara and David looked at me in surprise. The timid woman who used to cower in the corner of her kitchen was gone. In her place was a woman who had lost three sons to a monster, and I was not going to let him escape justice.

"I will go see Dr. Hollis myself," I stated.

"Caroline, that’s too risky," Clara protested. "He’s loyal to the Vances."

"He’s loyal to money and his own survival," I corrected. "He doesn't know that we have Luke’s financial records. When he sees that Luke’s accounts are frozen and that the ship is sinking, he will jump to save himself."

The next day, accompanied by David, I walked into the pristine marble lobby of the Crestview Psychiatric Clinic. The smell of antiseptic brought back a wave of nausea, but I kept my head high.

Dr. Hollis was sitting behind his mahogany desk when we walked in unannounced. He looked up, his expression shifting from annoyance to visible panic as he recognized me.

"Caroline... Mrs. Vance," Hollis stuttered, standing up. "What is the meaning of this? You shouldn't be here without your husband."

"My husband is currently in a county jail cell awaiting trial for attempted murder," I said coldly, sitting down opposite him. "And you, Dr. Hollis, are about to be named as an co-conspirator to human trafficking, medical fraud, and corporate extortion."

Hollis went pale. "That's absurd! I am a respected professional!"

David stepped forward, placing a thick dossier on the desk. "This dossier contains bank transfer records from Luke Vance's private account to an offshore entity under your wife's maiden name. Totaling over two million dollars over four years. Coincidentally, each transfer occurred within forty-eight hours of Caroline’s admitted stays at your facility."

Hollis sank back into his chair, sweat breaking out on his forehead.

"The state prosecutor is willing to offer you a deal, Dr. Hollis," David said smoothly. "Full immunity regarding the financial fraud if you provide a sworn affidavit testifying that Luke Vance falsified Caroline’s medical records and bribed you to drug her."

Hollis shook his head frantically. "You don't understand! The Vance family... they own people in the district attorney’s office! If I speak, they will ruin me!"

"If you don't speak," I leaned in, staring into his coward eyes, "I will make sure you spend the rest of your life in the same state penitentiary Luke is going to. You helped him kill my children, Hollis. Choose your side right now."
