Chapter 2 - The Mask Shatters

By midnight, the hospital had become a battleground.

Detective Miller, a stern-faced detective with tired eyes, sat in the chair next to my bed taking my official statement. Every word was agonizing to speak, forcing me to relive seven years of psychological torture and physical violence. I told him about the locked doors, the controlled bank accounts, the destroyed phones, the daily regimen of forced pills, and finally, the pot of boiling water.

"We ran tests on the residual liquid from your kitchen," Detective Miller said, writing notes in a black book. "We found traces of high-dose herbal abortifacients mixed with severe chemical contaminants in the kitchen sink, along with several altered pill bottles in the master bathroom. Coupled with Dr. Vance’s burn analysis, we have enough to charge Luke Vance with aggravated assault, domestic battery, and multiple counts of fetal homicide."

Relief flooded through me, but it was short-lived.

"However," Detective Miller added gravely, "his family’s attorney, Arthur Pendelton, is already here. They’re claiming Luke suffered a psychological breakdown due to the 'stress of your chronic medical conditions.' They are pushing for him to be released into a private psychiatric facility on high bail."

"No," Clara stood up, her posture formidable. "If he steps out of custody, he will destroy the evidence. He has contacts in the city registry and the hospital board."

"I agree," Miller said. "Which is why we need to move fast. Caroline, can you walk?"

"I can try," I said.

With Clara and a nurse assisting me, I managed to stand. The pain in my shoulders and arms flared, but the fire inside my chest burned hotter. I wasn't the timid, submissive wife Luke had molded over seven years. The truth had set a spark to the dry tinder of my soul.

We walked down the corridor toward the private administrative wing, where Luke’s high-powered attorney was currently holding court with the hospital administrators.

Through the glass window of the conference room, I saw Luke. He didn't look like a lunatic or a broken husband. He was sitting calmly, sipping a cup of coffee, speaking in hushed, confident tones to Arthur Pendelton. His mother, Eleanor Vance—a woman whose cold condescension had haunted my entire marriage—sat beside him, dabbing her non-existent tears with a lace handkerchief.

"He was just trying to help her," Eleanor was saying loudly as we pushed open the door. "Caroline has been delusionally unstable for years. She burned herself in a fit of depression over her inability to bear a child! My son is the victim here!"

The room fell dead silent as I walked in, supported by Clara.

Luke’s eyes locked onto mine. For a split second, a flash of genuine panic flickered across his face, quickly replaced by his signature gentle smile.

"Caroline, honey!" Luke took a step toward me, putting on a show for the administrators. "Thank God you’re okay. Please, sit down. You're confused, darling. Tell them how sick you’ve been feeling lately..."

"Don't touch her," Clara snapped, stepping in front of me.

"Clara," Eleanor sneered, looking up at my sister with disgust. "I see you’ve resurfaced to capitalize on my family’s tragedy. You always were an opportunistic leech."

"Save it, Eleanor," Clara replied coldly. She pulled a thick Manila folder from her leather briefcase and threw it onto the polished oak table. It slid across the wood and hit Pendelton’s coffee cup.

"What is this?" Pendelton asked, narrowing his eyes.

"That," Clara said, "is a complete record of Luke’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, along with financial transactions linked to a black-market pharmaceutical distributor over the past four years. It also includes statements from the housekeeper Luke fired three years ago—the one he paid off to keep quiet after she found blood-soaked towels in the basement."

Luke’s mother froze. Pendelton slowly opened the folder, his professional composure cracking as he flipped through the pages.

"You've been poisoning her," Clara continued, her voice ringing clearly throughout the room. "Inducing miscarriages to keep her mentally shattered, while systematically draining her inheritance trust fund into shell companies registered under your name, Luke."

Luke’s face flushed red. The fake tenderness dissolved instantly, replaced by a violent sneer. "You have no proof of that! Those documents are forged!"

"They aren't forged," Dr. Vance said, stepping into the room behind us with a team of police officers. "And neither are the blood toxicology reports we ran on Caroline two hours ago. Her system contains toxic levels of synthetic uterine stimulants. Mr. Vance, you are under arrest."

The police stepped forward. Handcuffs clinked into place.

"Caroline!" Luke screamed as they forced his hands behind his back. "You stupid, useless bitch! You think you can survive without me? You’re nothing! You’ll rot! I made you!"

I looked at him, feeling no fear, no despair—only a deep, cleansing disgust.

"You didn't make me, Luke," I said, my voice steady for the first time in seven years. "You just hid me. But I’m done hiding."
