Chapter 9 - The Debt Cleared

One month later.

The autumn leaves along the Chicago lakefront had turned to brilliant shades of gold and amber. The news of District Attorney Victor Cross's conviction and the purge of corrupt officials had dominated headlines for four straight weeks.

My father’s name was officially cleared by the Department of Justice. A formal public apology was issued to my mother and me, alongside the full restoration of his pension and a memorial plaque installed at the Federal Building downtown.

I stood on the stone balcony of the penthouse—the same balcony where I used to watch the rain while folding Roman’s shirts.

The penthouse was quiet now. No alarm panels tripping at 2:00 AM. No hidden bloodstains on the kitchen island.

A pair of warm, strong arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind. Roman pulled me back against his chest, resting his chin on my shoulder as the cool lake breeze blew through my hair.

"What are you thinking about?" Roman murmured, his lips brushing the shell of my ear.

"About how eleven months ago, I thought I was walking into the lion's den to kill a monster," I said softly, leaning back into his solid heat. "And instead, I found the only man who was willing to bleed to help me find the truth."

Roman chuckled softly, a low, velvet sound that vibrated against my back. He turned me around in his arms, looking down at me with an intensity that took my breath away.

"You aren't my housekeeper anymore, Elena," he said, reaching into his coat pocket and pulling out a small, sleek velvet box.

I raised an eyebrow, a slight smile touching my lips. "Oh? Does that mean I'm fired?"

"It means your contract has been permanently renegotiated," Roman replied softly.

He opened the box to reveal a stunning, flawless emerald ring set in platinum—the exact shade of the pine trees in the Indiana dunes where we had stood together against the storm.

"Roman..." I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"I spent my whole life surrounded by people who wanted something from me," Roman said, taking my hand, his voice thick with rare, profound emotion. "My money, my power, my protection. You walked into my life with nothing but a mop and a gun, and you saved my soul. Marry me, Elena. Run this city with me."

I looked up into the dark, passionate eyes of the man who had fought beside me, bled for me, and loved me with an fierce, unyielding devotion.

"On one condition," I said, sliding the ring onto my finger and wrapping my arms around his neck.

"Name it," he smiled, pulling me closer.

"You mop your own kitchen floor from now on."

Roman laughed—a rich, genuine sound that filled the high ceilings of the penthouse—before dipping his head and kissing me with a fierce, possessive warmth that sealed our promise forever.
