THE SECRET IN THE BATHROOM / Chapter 3 / 3

CHAPTER 3: THE WEDDING THAT NEVER WAS (HE)

Ethan didn’t remember walking out of the bathroom.

He only remembered the feeling.

Like every sound in the world had been turned down except the pounding in his own chest.

Music still played outside.

Soft violin notes drifting through the ballroom.

Guests laughing.

Glasses clinking.

A world pretending everything was perfect.

But Ethan Cole had stopped believing in “perfect” the moment a little girl in a white dress said one name:

Emma.

He stopped in the hallway.

The wedding coordinator appeared instantly.

“Mr. Cole, it’s time. Everyone is waiting. The bride is—”

“Where is the bride?” Ethan asked.

The question was calm.

Too calm.

The coordinator blinked.

“She’s in the bridal suite. Getting ready. Sir, you really need to—”

Ethan didn’t wait.

He walked.

Fast.

Then faster.

The bridal suite doors opened with a soft click.

Inside, everything looked like a dream.

White silk.

Flowers.

Perfume.

A bride standing in front of a mirror.

Emma.

Perfect.

Radiant.

A woman everyone believed was about to become Mrs. Cole.

She turned when she heard him enter.

And smiled.

That smile froze in place the moment she saw his face.

“Ethan?” she said softly. “What’s wrong?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

He just looked at her.

At the woman he was supposed to marry in minutes.

At the woman who was supposed to become his future.

Then he spoke.

“There’s a child in your bathroom.”

Emma’s smile disappeared.

Not slowly.

Instantly.

Like a mask being ripped off.

“What?” she whispered.

“A little girl,” Ethan continued. “White dress. Crying. She says her mother’s name is Emma.”

The silence that followed was absolute.

Emma’s fingers tightened around the edge of the vanity.

“That’s not possible,” she said immediately.

But her voice wasn’t steady.

Ethan noticed that.

He stepped closer.

“She also said something else,” he added.

Emma’s eyes flickered.

“…what did she say?”

Ethan’s voice dropped.

“She said the groom is dangerous.”

Emma went pale.

For a moment, she couldn’t speak.

Then she forced a laugh.

A broken one.

“That’s insane,” she said. “Ethan, there’s no child. This is some kind of mistake—”

“Her name is Lily.”

Emma froze completely.

The room went silent.

Even the air felt heavier.

Ethan watched her carefully.

“You know her,” he said.

It wasn’t a question anymore.

It was a statement.

Emma’s breath hitched.

“I… I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

But her eyes had changed.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Fear.

That was worse.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Emma,” he said quietly. “Tell me the truth.”

A long pause.

Then—

The sound of distant thunder outside.

And Emma broke.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just… collapsed.

She sat down slowly, like her legs had forgotten how to hold her.

“I didn’t want it to happen like this,” she whispered.

Ethan went still.

“What did you say?”

Emma didn’t look at him.

“I didn’t want her here today.”

Silence.

The world stopped again.

Ethan’s voice sharpened.

“Where is she supposed to be?”

Emma shook her head.

“She wasn’t supposed to be seen.”

That sentence.

That exact sentence.

Ethan had heard it already.

From the child.

His jaw tightened.

“Emma,” he said again, slower now. “What did you do?”

Her hands trembled.

“I didn’t have a choice.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Tears formed in her eyes.

“She’s not supposed to exist in your world,” Emma whispered.

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Explain.”

Emma finally looked at him.

And what he saw there—

was not love.

Not joy.

Not marriage.

It was survival.

“I had her before I met you,” she said.

Silence.

Ethan blinked once.

“Before me?”

Emma nodded.

A single tear fell.

“I never told you because I knew this would happen.”

Ethan’s voice dropped dangerously.

“You hid a child from me.”

“I protected her,” Emma snapped suddenly, voice breaking. “You don’t understand what kind of world you live in.”

Ethan stared at her.

Something inside him shifted.

Slowly.

Coldly.

“And what world do I live in?” he asked.

Emma hesitated.

Then whispered:

“The kind of world that destroys things it can’t control.”

The words hung there.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

Ethan stepped back.

Just one step.

But it felt like distance had become infinite.

“So let me understand,” he said quietly. “The child in my bathroom… is mine.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Didn’t answer.

And that silence—

was the answer.

Outside, the wedding music still played.

No one knew yet.

No one had stopped.

But inside the bridal suite, something irreversible had already happened.

Ethan turned away slowly.

Not angry.

Not shouting.

Just… emptied.

He walked toward the door.

“Ethan,” Emma whispered.

He stopped.

Didn’t turn around.

“You were never supposed to find out today,” she said, voice shaking.

A pause.

Then Ethan spoke without looking at her.

“Then when?”

Silence.

Emma couldn’t answer.

Because there was no good answer.

Ethan opened the door.

And stopped.

In the hallway stood Lily.

Still in her white dress.

Still crying.

She had followed him.

Or maybe she had never truly been hidden at all.

The little girl looked up at him.

Terrified.

And hopeful.

“Are you… the groom?” she asked softly.

Ethan stared at her.

Long.

Unmoving.

Then slowly—

He crouched down.

At her level.

And for the first time since the wedding began…

his voice softened.

“Yes,” he said.

A pause.

Then:

“And I think I might be your father.”

Lily’s breath broke.

And she ran into his arms.

Behind him, Emma covered her mouth as she cried silently.

Because in that moment—

the wedding ended.

But something else began.

Not a marriage.

Not a betrayal.

But a truth that had been waiting years to be spoken.

And outside, the guests waited for a ceremony that would never happen.

Because Ethan Cole had just discovered that the most important person in his life…

May you like

had already been living without him.
