THE SECRET IN THE BATHROOM / Chapter 1 / 3

CHAPTER 1: THE GIRL IN THE WHITE DRESS

The bathroom door at the end of the bridal suite was supposed to be locked.

It wasn’t.

And that was the first mistake of the wedding.

The second mistake was that the groom, Ethan Cole, was already ten minutes away from walking down the aisle when he heard it.

A sound.

Small.

Broken.

A sob that didn’t belong in a place filled with champagne, silk, and perfection.

Ethan paused in the hallway.

The wedding coordinator was speaking into a headset behind him.

“Five minutes, Mr. Cole. Guests are seated. Photographer is ready. We just need—”

He wasn’t listening anymore.

Because the sound came again.

A child crying.

Inside the bathroom.

Ethan frowned.

There shouldn’t be any children in this part of the venue.

Especially not crying.

He pushed the door open.

And froze.

The bathroom lights were dim, golden reflections bouncing off marble walls.

And in the far corner—

A little girl.

Curled up like she was trying to disappear into herself.

She wore a tiny white princess dress.

Too small for the grandeur of the wedding.

Too fragile for the silence she was trapped in.

Her knees were pulled tightly to her chest.

Her face was buried in her arms.

She was shaking uncontrollably.

Ethan stepped forward instinctively.

“Hey…”

No response.

He crouched slowly, careful not to scare her.

“It’s okay,” he said softly. “You’re safe. What are you doing here?”

The girl flinched at the sound of his voice.

Then looked up.

Big, tear-filled eyes.

Terrified.

“I—” she choked.

Her voice broke completely.

Ethan’s chest tightened.

“Hey, hey, it’s okay,” he said gently. “You don’t have to be scared. Are you lost? Did you come in here by accident?”

She shook her head violently.

No.

That made no sense.

A child this small couldn’t have wandered into a private bridal suite unnoticed.

Ethan slowly extended his hand.

“You can take my hand. I’ll help you find your parents.”

The girl hesitated.

Then, trembling, she placed her tiny hand in his.

Cold.

Too cold.

Like she had been sitting there for a long time.

“What’s your name?” he asked softly.

She hesitated again.

Then whispered:

“…Lily.”

“Hi, Lily,” Ethan said gently. “I’m Ethan.”

Her grip tightened instantly when she heard his name.

Like it triggered something.

Fear.

Real fear.

Ethan noticed.

“What’s wrong?”

The girl started shaking harder.

“My mom said…” she whispered.

Ethan leaned closer.

“Yes?”

“She told me to stay hidden.”

Silence.

The air changed.

Something subtle.

Heavy.

“…hidden?” Ethan repeated slowly.

The girl nodded quickly, tears spilling again.

“And never go outside.”

Ethan blinked.

“What do you mean, never go outside?”

Her lips trembled.

“I’m not supposed to be seen.”

A chill crawled up Ethan’s spine.

He straightened slightly.

“Lily… where is your mom?”

The girl’s breathing became uneven.

“She said it’s a secret.”

Ethan frowned.

“A secret?”

“She said I mustn’t tell you anything.”

And then—

The girl broke down completely.

Sobbing.

Violent, uncontrollable sobs that echoed against the marble walls.

Ethan felt something shift inside his chest.

Confusion.

Then unease.

Then something darker.

He looked toward the door.

The wedding outside.

The music.

The guests.

The life he was about to step into.

And suddenly—

It didn’t feel real anymore.

“Lily,” he said carefully. “How did you get here?”

She didn’t answer.

Just cried harder.

Ethan crouched again, softer this time.

“You’re not in trouble,” he said. “I promise. But I need to understand. Why are you hiding in my wedding bathroom?”

The words barely left his mouth before he noticed it.

The girl’s reaction changed.

Her crying stopped for half a second.

Just one.

Then came worse trembling.

“I shouldn’t be here,” she whispered.

Ethan’s pulse slowed.

“Why not?”

The girl swallowed hard.

Then said the sentence that froze everything:

“Because Mommy said… the groom is dangerous.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Even the air felt like it stopped moving.

Ethan stared at her.

For a moment, he didn’t process the words.

Then slowly—

Very slowly—

They sank in.

“The groom is dangerous.”

He exhaled sharply.

“Who told you that?”

“My mom.”

Ethan’s voice dropped.

“Where is your mom now?”

The girl shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Something cold formed in Ethan’s stomach.

This wasn’t random.

This wasn’t a lost child.

This was something else.

Something planned.

Outside the bathroom, faint music played again.

The wedding march.

Time moving forward.

Without him.

Without awareness of what was happening behind a closed door.

Ethan stood slowly.

And for the first time in his life—

He felt something he couldn’t explain.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

But the feeling that something in his life had just been rewritten.

He looked at the little girl again.

“You said your mom told you not to tell me anything.”

The girl nodded weakly.

Ethan crouched again.

“Lily… I need you to listen to me very carefully.”

She looked up.

Eyes wide.

Trembling.

He spoke slowly.

“What is your mom’s name?”

The girl hesitated.

For a long time.

Then whispered something so quiet it barely existed.

“…Emma.”

The world stopped.

Ethan’s breath caught.

Because that name—

That name wasn’t supposed to be possible.

Not here.

Not now.

Not in this wedding.

He stared at the girl.

Then at her white dress.

Then at the bathroom door.

And suddenly—

May you like

Everything he thought he knew about today…

Collapsed.
