Chapter 8 - The Remaking of Apartment 4B

The following morning, a long white moving truck pulled up outside the old brick apartment building where Martha and the children had lived for over twenty years.

Emma and Martha walked up the narrow, creaky stairwell toward apartment 4B for the very last time. The peeling wallpaper, drafty hallway, and squeaky floorboards that had defined their years of struggle seemed distant now, like memories from another life.

Inside the small apartment, William’s logistics team had carefully packed all of Martha’s precious personal keepsakes—her vintage photo albums, her teaching awards, and her late husband’s hand-carved rocking chair—into protective wooden crates.

"I’m going to miss this old place, in a strange sort of way," Martha admitted softly, running her hand along the worn wooden frame of the kitchen doorway where she had marked Emma’s height every birthday since she was a toddler.

William stepped into the apartment, wearing comfortable trousers and a simple sweater, leaving his corporate suit behind for the day.

"You don't have to miss it, Martha," William said with a warm smile. "We’re keeping the building."

Emma turned around in surprise. "You bought the building?"

"I bought the whole block," William revealed. "The entire structure is being completely renovated and converted into rent-free housing for retired teachers and single parents. And apartment 4B will remain exactly as it is—a historical landmark for our foundation, named The Reynolds Suite."

Emma hugged William tightly around his waist. "Thank you, Mr. Parker!"

"Now then," William said, picking up Noah’s diaper bag. "Your new home is waiting."

They walked down the front steps of the building where a private driver opened the door to a spacious luxury SUV. They drove north, away from the cramped city streets, toward the lush, green hills of Westchester County.

After a thirty-minute drive along a winding, tree-lined lane, the vehicle pulled through a pair of grand iron gates.

Beyond the gates lay a magnificent, historic stone manor surrounded by sprawling lawns, colorful flower gardens, and ancient oak trees. A sparkling lake shimmered in the distance under the warm afternoon sun.

"Where are we?" Emma gasped, her face pressed against the glass window.

"This is Oakridge Estate," William said quietly, looking at Martha. "Thirty years ago, Martha... when you saved me from that grocery store, you told me that your dream was to one day retire in a house surrounded by trees where your grandchildren could run free."

Martha’s hand flew to her mouth, tears brimming in her eyes. "William... no... this is too much..."

"It’s not enough," William replied gently. "This estate belongs to the Reynolds family now. Fully deeded, fully paid, with a permanent domestic and medical staff at your service for the rest of your lives."
