Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Broken

Inside the dark warehouse, the air was silent save for Liam O'Leary’s ragged gasps. He lay on his back, his face covered in blood, with Rafe’s heavy boot pressed firmly against his throat.

Maeve walked in, her hands still shaking, followed by Dominic and a dozen heavily armed bodyguards.

"Please... Rafe," Liam choked out, his arrogance completely gone as he looked up at the man who held his life in his hands. "It was just business. The docks... you can have the docks."

"It stopped being business when you threatened a child in a hospital bed," Rafe said, his voice entirely devoid of human emotion. He raised his weapon, aiming it directly at Liam’s chest.

"Rafe, wait!" Maeve called out, stepping into the light.

Rafe didn't lower the gun, but his gray eyes shifted to her, tight with irritation. "He tried to kill my sister, Maeve. He threatened your brother. He dies tonight."

"If you kill him here, the O'Leary faction will start a gang war that will destroy South Boston," Maeve said, walking over until she was standing right beside him. She reached out, her small hand gently covering his knuckles on the grip of the gun. "Look at him. He’s finished. Dominic’s men have already seized his ledgers and accounts. Let the federal authorities handle him. Let him spend the rest of his life behind bars knowing he lost everything to a waitress and the man who claimed her."

Rafe stared at her, the muscle in his jaw twitching. The tension between them was palpable, a battle of wills between the most dangerous man in Boston and the girl who had nothing left to lose.

Slowly, incredibly, Rafe lowered the gun. He looked up at Dominic. "Call the FBI director. Tell him we have Liam O'Leary tied up on a silver platter with enough evidence to put him away for three lifetimes."

He turned back to Maeve, pulling her suddenly into his arms and burying his face in her neck. His embrace was so tight it almost hurt, but Maeve didn't pull away. She wrapped her arms around his neck, finally feeling the heavy weight of fear melt away from both of them.
