Chapter 3 - The Beacon Hill Ball

The grand ballroom of the Colazo Estate was a sea of glittering diamonds, black tuxedos, and whispered conspiracies. It was the annual Winter Gala, an event where Boston’s highest society—politicians, judges, and old-money billionaires—rubbed elbows with the city’s underground royalty.
Maeve stood before the full-length mirror in her guest suite, staring at a stranger.
The bruises on her face had been masterfully covered with makeup, and her blonde hair was pinned up in an elegant, sophisticated twist. She wore a breathtaking emerald-green silk gown that clung to her curves, the high collar specifically designed to hide the heavy bandages covering her back and shoulder.
"You look beautiful, Maeve," a soft voice said.
Cecily Colazo stepped into the room, wearing a pale blue dress. The nineteen-year-old looked vibrant, her eyes bright with a deep, genuine gratitude. She walked over and gently took Maeve’s uninjured hand. "Thank you. For everything. My brother can be scary, I know. But he would never let anything happen to you."
"I just did what anyone would do, Cecily," Maeve said softly, though she knew it wasn't true. Everyone else had run.
"No, you didn't," a deep voice rumbled from the doorway.
Rafe stood there, looking impossibly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. He walked over, offering Maeve his arm. His gray eyes scanned her from head to toe, a rare flash of raw approval gleaming in their depths. "It’s time, Maeve. Boston is waiting."
When they descended the grand marble staircase into the ballroom, the deafening roar of conversation dropped into an absolute, dead silence. Hundreds of faces turned toward them.
Among the crowd stood Maeve’s former restaurant manager, Mr. Higgins, who had sneaked into the gala as a guest of a minor city official. His glass of champagne slipped from his fingers, shattering loudly on the floor as he recognized the waitress he had humiliated just two days ago walking arm-in-arm with Rafe Colazo.
Rafe didn't look at him. He led Maeve to the center of the raised dais.
"Listen to me carefully," Rafe’s voice echoed through the microphone, cutting through the room like a blade. "Two days ago, an act of cowardice was committed against my family. And two days ago, this woman stood up when everyone else crawled away. Her name is Maeve Donovan."

He turned to her, taking her hand and lifting it for the entire room to see. "From this moment on, her debts are my debts. Her enemies are my enemies. And anyone who looks at her with anything less than absolute respect will answer directly to me. She is no longer a servant to this city. She is my bride."
A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom. Maeve’s heart hammered against her ribs as she looked into Rafe’s unyielding gray eyes. This wasn't just a declaration of protection; it was a claim. He had bound her to his dangerous world, and there was no going back.
