Chapter 9 - The Warmth of Winter

One month later.

Christmas Eve had arrived at the Eldergate estate.

A soft, fluffy blanket of white snow covered the three stories of dark gray stone, the dry fountain, and the sprawling gravel driveway. Warm, yellow light poured from every window, reflecting off the snow like scattered diamonds.

Inside the grand foyer, a massive fifteen-foot pine tree stood decorated with golden ribbons, twinkling white lights, and hundreds of glittering glass ornaments.

In the main kitchen, the air was filled with the delicious scents of roasted garlic, sweet pastry dough, and fresh basil.

Lucia Bellini stood by the stove, stirring a massive pot of traditional Sicilian tomato sauce, wearing a clean, beautiful red apron over her dark wool dress. Her face was bright, healthy, and filled with a deep, peaceful joy she had not known in seven years.

Running through the kitchen, wearing a brand-new velvet Christmas dress and shiny black shoes, was four-year-old Lina. She was chasing Biscotti, who wore a small red bow around her collar.

The heavy kitchen doors opened, and Damiano Falcone stepped inside.

He wore a dark navy cashmere sweater and trousers. His hair was soft, his face relaxed and warm.

And his hands were bare.

He had burned his black leather gloves in the study fireplace three weeks ago, throwing them into the flames and watching them turn to ash.

"Signor Damiano!" Lina squealed in delight, dropping her cat and running across the tiled floor.

Damiano immediately knelt down on both knees, opening his arms wide. Lina threw herself into his arms, wrapping her small arms tightly around his neck.

Damiano lifted her up into his arms effortlessly, kissing her soft cheek, making the little girl giggle uncontrollably.

"Merry Christmas, Piccolina," Damiano smiled softly.

Lucia turned away from the stove, wiping her hands on her apron, her dark eyes shining with deep affection as she looked at the man who had transformed their lives.

"Dinner will be ready in ten minutes, Mr. Falcone," Lucia said gently.

"Lucia," Damiano said softly, carrying Lina over to the counter. "How many times must I tell you? Call me Damiano."

Lucia blushed slightly, a beautiful smile lighting up her face. "Damiano."

Damiano reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box. He set it down on the counter in front of Lucia.

Lucia blinked, surprised. "What is this?"

"Open it," Damiano encouraged gently.

Lucia opened the box. Inside lay a heavy brass key and a clean, signed legal deed to the Eldergate estate—listing Lucia Bellini and Lina Bellini as fifty percent co-owners of the entire property and the Falcone Educational Trust.

Lucia gasped, covering her mouth with her hand, tears welling in her eyes. "Damiano... I... I can't accept this! This estate is worth millions!"

"You gave me back my life, Lucia," Damiano said, his voice filled with profound, unshakeable sincerity. "You and Lina gave this cold stone house a heart. You belong here. Forever."

Lucia looked from the legal deed up into Damiano’s dark, gentle eyes. She reached out, her hand gently taking his bare, warm hand in hers, squeezing it tightly.

"We are family now," Lucia whispered softly.

"Yes," Damiano smiled, his heart feeling completely full. "We are."
