Chapter 8 - The Fall of Conti

By 9:00 a.m. that morning, the fog over Long Island Sound had cleared, replaced by a cold, brilliant blue sky.

Inside the grand penthouse office of the Conti Shipping Company on Pier 42 in Manhattan, Salvatore Conti sat behind his massive glass desk, smoking a thick Cuban cigar, looking out at the skyline.

Salvatore was fifty-five, a ruthless, heavy-set mobster who had controlled the Brooklyn docks for twenty years.

Standing beside his desk were four of his top lieutenants, waiting for the news.

"Carlo is late," Salvatore barked, flicking his cigar ash into a crystal tray. "He was supposed to call at eight to confirm Falcone’s body was in the Sound."

"Maybe the storm delayed him, Boss," one lieutenant suggested.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the penthouse office burst open.

It wasn't Carlo.

Damiano Falcone stepped into the room, flanked by twenty heavily armed men from the Falcone family’s inner guard—men who had been mobilized the moment Damiano reached his main captain after securing the house.

Behind them stood Stefano Bruno—his shoulder heavily bandaged from the gunshot wound he had survived at the boathouse, his eyes burning with absolute loyalty to his Don.

Salvatore Conti jumped up from his chair, his cigar falling from his mouth, his face turning completely pale with terror.

"Falcone?!" Conti gasped, stumbling backward against the glass window. "How... how are you alive?!"

Damiano walked slowly across the Persian rug, stopping three feet from Conti’s desk. He wore a brand-new charcoal suit, his hair neatly combed back, his posture towering and majestic.

He did not wear gloves.

He reached into his jacket pocket and tossed a heavy, blood-stained burlap sack onto Conti’s glass desk.

The sack rolled open, spilling out Carlo’s phone, the offshore ledgers, and the two point three million dollar cashier's check.

"Carlo sent his regards," Damiano said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying rumble that silenced the entire room.

Conti’s four lieutenants looked at Damiano’s twenty armed guards, then looked at their boss. Slowly, deliberately, all four lieutenants dropped their weapons onto the floor, stepping back, raising their hands in surrender. They knew when a war was already lost.

Conti stood alone, sweating profusely, shaking like a leaf. "Damiano... listen to me! We can work this out! The docks... I’ll give you seventy percent of Pier 42! Just leave Manhattan!"

Damiano leaned forward, setting his bare, pale hands flat on Conti’s glass desk.

"You tried to kill me in my own home," Damiano whispered softly. "You tried to touch the people under my roof. There is no negotiation, Salvatore."

Damiano looked over at Stefano. "Take him down to the cellar at Pier 42. Strip his accounts. Transfer his shipping lines to the Falcone Foundation. And then... make sure he disappears."

"With pleasure, Boss," Stefano bowed, grabbing Conti by his collar as the guards dragged the screaming, begging mobster out of the room.

Damiano stood alone in the grand penthouse, looking out at the glittering blue waters of the harbor. The war that had haunted the city for a decade was over in a single morning.

He reached into his pocket, touching the cool steel of his father's watch.

Il tempo è tutto.

"Yes, Father," Damiano murmured softly to the empty room. "It is."
