Chapter 6 - A Mask of Silk and Steel

By the second week, the city's elite society pages were brimming with speculation.
The story of the runaway bride had been eclipsed by photographs published in the Chicago Tribune—pictures of DeJuan Marshall attending a high-profile charity gala at the Art Institute, flanked not by an heiress, but by a striking, intelligent young woman in a custom sapphire gown who managed his affairs with icy perfection.
Nadine had become his public face. While DeJuan handled the tactical operations from his armored sedan or study, Nadine represented him at public land auction hearings, legal depositions, and charity boards.
She discovered she had a natural gift for the theater of power. Growing up poor had taught her how to read people’s insecurities instantly. She could spot a corrupt politician’s bribe price within five minutes of conversation, and she delivered DeJuan's subtle threats with a sweet, polite smile that left corporate executives trembling.
"You're getting too good at this," Leo remarked one afternoon as they drove back from a zoning board meeting where Nadine had single-handedly secured three deep-water docks for the Marshall Logistics firm, undercutting the Rossi family's bids. "The Rossi capos are calling you 'La Mulina'—the mill girl who grinds bones into dust."
Nadine looked out the window of the armored Maybach. "I'm just securing the Don's interests, Leo."
"No," Leo corrected, his tone unusually serious as he looked at her through the rear-view mirror. "You're securing his heart. And that makes you the most dangerous target in this city."
Before Nadine could respond, a sudden, blinding flash illuminated the intersection ahead.
CRASH!
A heavy commercial garbage truck ran the red light, slamming directly into the side of the lead security SUV escorting their Maybach. The explosion of glass and tearing metal echoed through the avenue like a bomb.
"Ambush!" Leo roared, pulling a suppressed submachine gun from beneath his seat. "Get down, Nadine! Get down!"
From the side alleys, four black sedans accelerated toward them, blocking the intersection. Masked men poured out, raising automatic rifles and opening fire on the Maybach.
Bullets rained down on the reinforced glass, creating spiderweb fractures across the bulletproof windows. The deafening roar of gunfire filled the vehicle.
Nadine ducked onto the floorboards, holding her breath as the car shook under the barrage.
In the front passenger seat, DeJuan pulled a heavy desert eagle pistol from his shoulder holster. Despite being confined to the front seat, his posture was completely calm, his eyes cold and calculated.
"Reverse, Leo," DeJuan commanded smoothly, racking the slide of his weapon. "Drive through the storefront on the right. Create a funnel."
"On it!" Leo slammed the Maybach into reverse, flooring the accelerator. The heavy armored vehicle crashed backward through the glass window of an empty carpet warehouse, taking out the brick pillars and bringing down a section of the masonry roof onto the pursuing attackers.
DeJuan leaned out the shattered driver's side window, firing three precise, heavy shots into the engine block of the lead assault car, causing it to burst into flames.
"Nadine!" DeJuan called out over the ringing in her ears, his voice sharp with anxiety. "Are you hit?!"
"I'm... I'm okay!" she gasped, pulling herself up onto the leather seat, her sapphire dress torn at the knee, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.
DeJuan reached back, his large hand gripping her arm, pulling her toward the front console until her face was inches from his. He scanned her frantically for blood, his cool, detachment completely shattering in a rare display of raw horror.
"If they touched you..." DeJuan growled, his jaw trembling with a terrifying rage. "I will burn down every Rossi estate in the Midwest."

In that moment, amid the smell of cordite, shattered glass, and burning tires, Nadine realized the truth. This was no longer just a contract. It wasn't about ten thousand dollars a week or her mother’s medical bills.
She was in love with a monster. And the monster was completely, utterly unraveled by the thought of losing her.
