Chapter 3 - The Offer in the Study

Two hours later, the last of the uneasy guests had departed the estate under the watchful, armed escort of Marshall soldiers. The champagne was flat, the five-tier cake remained un-cut, and the grand ballroom was echoing with the quiet scraping of cleaning crew brooms.

Nadine sat in a massive leather armchair inside DeJuan’s private study on the second floor. The room was dominated by dark mahogany shelving, thousands of leather-bound books, and a massive oak desk designed specifically to accommodate his wheelchair.

A fire crackled in the hearth, casting long, dancing shadows across the wall.

Leo stood near the window, his arms crossed over his chest, glaring at Nadine as if she were a Trojan horse filled with explosives.

"She’s a nobody, Don," Leo argued, his tone strained. "We checked her background while you were downstairs. She’s twenty-six. Works two jobs. Her father died three years ago; her mother is in an assisted care facility in south Chicago. No record, no mob ties, no leverage. Bringing her into the inner sanctum right now—when the Rossis are looking for any sign of instability—is madness."

DeJuan sat behind his desk, reviewing a thick stack of financial documents. He didn't look up. "She gave me back my dignity in front of six hundred people, Leo. What did you offer me today? A back door through the sacristy?"

Leo swallowed hard, his jaw tightening, but he remained silent.

"Miss Walker," DeJuan said, pushing the files aside and leaning forward, resting his powerful forearms on the desk. "My offer is simple. I am offering you a position as my personal assistant."

Nadine rested her hands in her lap, looking around the opulent room before returning her gaze to the mob boss. "I’m an environmental science major, Mr. Marshall. I drop out of semester blocks when I run out of tuition money. I don't know how to run a syndicate."

"I don't need you to run a syndicate. I have three hundred men with guns to do that," DeJuan said coldly. "I need someone in my immediate orbit who doesn't look at me with pity, and who isn't plotting to stick a knife in my spine the moment I turn my back."

He slid a single sheet of paper across the dark wood.

"That is a contract. Ten thousand dollars a week. Full medical benefits for your mother’s facility paid directly by my charitable foundation. Housing here at the estate, private security detail, and total immunity from my secondary business operations. Your job is simple: you manage my personal schedule, you accompany me to public appearances, and you remind this city that DeJuan Marshall does not hide."

Nadine stared at the figure written on the paper. Ten thousand dollars a week. It was more money than her mother made in a year at the textile mill before her strokes. It meant no more landlady threats, no more missed meals, no more humiliating scholarship rejection letters.

"And what happens when Camilla Rossi comes back?" Nadine asked, her voice quiet but piercing. "Or when her father decides to finish what this insult started?"

DeJuan’s eyes darkened into slate gray. "Camilla Rossi made a calculation today. She believed that leaving me at the altar would cripple my standing and force my capos to strip my territory. She miscalculated. Tomorrow morning, the papers won't be writing about the runaway bride. They’ll be writing about the maid who took her place."

"You're using me as a shield," Nadine noted, leaning forward.

"I’m using you as a message," DeJuan corrected honestly. "And I’m paying you handsomely for the privilege. Do we have a deal, Miss Walker?"

Nadine looked at the silver pen resting beside the contract. She thought of her mother’s freezing room at the state-run nursing home. She thought of her own exhausted reflection in the catering mirror.

She picked up the pen and signed her name in clear, elegant cursive.

"Welcome to the family, Nadine," DeJuan said softly, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips. "Leo, show her to the East Wing suite. And call the tailor. She’s going to need a new uniform."
