Chapter 10 - The Secret We Kept

The private car pulled up to the grand stone entrance of the Manhattan Academy.
Parents in expensive clothes and polished suits were walking their children up the steps. Six years ago, I would have looked at these people with cold disdain, seeing only fake smiles and hidden secrets.
Today, I saw a world my daughter belonged to—a world of peace, light, and endless possibilities.
Lila hopped out of the car, holding her pink backpack, looking up at the grand school doors with excitement rather than fear.
She turned back to me, wrapping her arms around my leg for a tight hug. "Bye, Daddy! Bye, Mommy!"
"Have a wonderful day, my sweet girl," Elena kissed her head.
"I'll be right here to pick you up at three o'clock," I promised, kneeling to straighten her collar.
Lila nodded, took a step toward the steps, then paused. She turned back around, looked at me with those fearless, curious gray eyes, and smiled brightly.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, Lila?"
"Remember when I asked you on the plane if you ever loved someone enough to ruin your own life?" she asked innocently.
I smiled, remembering the rainy night thirty thousand feet in the air when my life had changed forever.
"I remember," I said softly.
"What's the answer?" she asked, tilting her head.
I reached out, gently touching the yellow Band-Aid she still insisted on keeping in her cardigan pocket as a lucky charm.
"The answer, Lila," I said, my voice rich with deep, eternal devotion, "is that loving you didn't ruin my life. It saved it."
Lila beamed, turned around, and ran up the steps into the bright, sunlit hallway of her new school, her yellow cardigan flying behind her like a beacon of hope.

I stood beside Elena, wrapping my arm around her shoulders as we watched our daughter disappear into her bright future.
The most feared man in New York was no longer feared because he was cold and heartless. He was feared because he had everything in the world to protect—and he would never let it go again.
