CHAPTER 5 – THE WAR FOR HIS SONS

The most dangerous man in Chicago had finally discovered the truth.

And the truth was worse than any enemy.

Because enemies could be destroyed.

Betrayal from family had no easy target.

It lived in memories.

It lived in old photographs.

It lived in every moment Dominic Ferraro had trusted someone who never deserved it.

For eleven years, Dominic had believed he was fighting to protect the Ferraro empire.

He had built walls.

Created alliances.

Destroyed anyone who threatened his family name.

But now he understood something his father had tried to teach him before he died.

An empire built on fear was not a legacy.

It was a prison.

And Dominic Ferraro had spent half his life guarding the door.

The storm arrived three days after the video.

Chicago was covered in rain.

The kind of rain that made the city look like it was hiding something.

Dominic stood in the Ferraro Tower war room, staring at the massive screen in front of him.

Every person who had been involved in the old Ferraro organization was listed.

Every connection.

Every payment.

Every betrayal.

At the center was one name.

Victor Salvatore.

His father’s closest friend.

His mentor.

The man who had taught Dominic how to negotiate.

How to read people.

How to survive.

The man who had been there the night Dominic’s father died.

Nick stood beside him.

“We confirmed it.”

Dominic did not look away.

“Say it.”

Nick took a breath.

“Victor was never loyal to your father.”

Silence.

“He was loyal to the Ferraro throne.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

Nick continued.

“He believed your father was weak because he wanted to dismantle the organization.”

Dominic stared at the screen.

“And Evelyn?”

“His partner.”

The words were not surprising anymore.

That was the worst part.

Nothing surprised him now.

Not betrayal.

Not lies.

Not family.

“Where is Victor?”

Nick hesitated.

“Moving.”

Dominic turned.

“Toward what?”

Nick looked at him.

“Your children.”

The room went silent.

Because everyone understood.

This was no longer about power.

Not really.

Victor had spent eleven years hiding the truth.

Not because Claire mattered.

Not because the Ferraro empire mattered.

Because Dominic’s sons represented something far more dangerous.

A future.

A future Victor could not control.

Claire refused to leave her apartment.

Dominic had offered the Ferraro estate.

A private security compound.

A hidden location.

She rejected all of them.

“No.”

Dominic stared at her.

“No?”

“No.”

“You understand someone tried to kill us?”

“Yes.”

“And you still want to stay here?”

Claire looked around.

At the small kitchen.

The children’s drawings.

The old sofa.

The place where her sons had taken their first steps.

“This is their home.”

Dominic’s expression softened.

“I can build you another.”

“I don’t want another.”

The answer was immediate.

“You don’t understand.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Then explain.”

Claire stepped closer.

“For eleven years, I have protected them from your world.”

A pause.

“I won’t let your world destroy the only normal thing they have.”

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

Dominic looked toward the hallway.

Three little boys were watching them.

Trying not to be noticed.

Dominic almost smiled.

They were terrible at hiding.

Especially with his eyes.

“I don’t want to take them away from you.”

Claire looked surprised.

“I thought you did.”

Dominic shook his head.

“No.”

His voice lowered.

“I spent eleven years believing I lost them.”

A pause.

“I won’t spend another day losing them because I’m too selfish to understand what they need.”

For a moment, Claire saw him.

Not Dominic Ferraro.

Not the man everyone feared.

The man she had loved.

The man who used to fall asleep on her shoulder during movies because he was too stubborn to admit he was tired.

The man who secretly learned how to cook because he wanted to surprise her.

The man who had been buried beneath years of anger.

That evening, Dominic did something nobody expected.

He cancelled every major Ferraro operation.

Every meeting.

Every expansion.

Every negotiation.

The organization went silent.

People noticed.

And they became afraid.

Because when Dominic Ferraro stopped moving…

Something bigger was coming.

Inside the old Ferraro estate, the remaining family leaders gathered.

One of them spoke.

“Dominic, this empire cannot stop because of children.”

The room became still.

Dominic looked at him.

“Careful.”

The man swallowed.

“I mean no disrespect.”

“You just called my sons a problem.”

“No.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“You called them a weakness.”

The man said nothing.

Dominic looked around.

“For years, you believed family was something we protected because it gave us power.”

He paused.

“You were wrong.”

His voice became colder.

“Family is the only reason power matters.”

Nobody spoke.

Because Dominic Ferraro had changed.

The old Dominic protected the empire.

The new Dominic was willing to destroy it.

At midnight, Claire received a phone call.

Unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

Almost.

Then she heard the voice.

“Claire.”

Her entire body froze.

Because she knew.

“Victor.”

A pause.

“I’m surprised Dominic hasn’t found you a better hiding place.”

Claire’s hand tightened around the phone.

“What do you want?”

“You know what I want.”

“No.”

“You’re smarter than that.”

Victor’s voice remained calm.

“You have something that belongs to the Ferraro family.”

Claire looked toward the sleeping boys.

“They are not yours.”

A quiet laugh.

“You still don’t understand.”

“What?”

“The boys are not the inheritance.”

Silence.

“They are the key.”

Claire’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?”

Victor continued.

“Your father-in-law left something behind.”

“My father-in-law?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Something Dominic was never supposed to find.”

Claire’s heart raced.

“What?”

Victor smiled through the phone.

“Ask Dominic about the letters.”

The line went dead.

When Dominic arrived, Claire was waiting.

Her face told him everything.

“What happened?”

She handed him the phone.

“Victor called.”

Every instinct inside Dominic awakened.

“What did he say?”

Claire hesitated.

“He said the boys are the key.”

Dominic frowned.

“The key to what?”

“He mentioned your father.”

A long silence.

Then:

“The letters.”

Dominic froze.

Because suddenly he remembered.

His father’s old study.

The locked drawer.

The one thing Dominic had never been able to open.

The drawer his father told him:

“When you are ready, you will know.”

Dominic had always assumed it was about the business.

The empire.

Power.

But maybe…

Maybe it was about this.

The old Ferraro mansion had been abandoned for years.

But inside the study, nothing had changed.

Dominic stood before the desk.

The desk where his father had made decisions that shaped Chicago.

Claire stood behind him.

“You’ve been here before?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t know.”

Dominic looked at the locked drawer.

A small metal box sat inside.

His father’s initials were engraved on it.

D.F.

Dominic opened it.

Inside were letters.

Hundreds.

But one envelope was different.

His name was written on it.

For Dominic. When the truth becomes more important than the Ferraro name.

His hands shook.

He opened it.

The letter was short.

My son,

If you are reading this, then they have finally taken everything from you.

Dominic stopped.

Claire watched him.

They will tell you that power is what keeps people safe.

They are wrong.

Power only attracts people who want to control you.

The only thing they cannot control is love.

Dominic swallowed.

I discovered the Ferraro empire was built on something unforgivable.

Your grandfather created a system that rewarded loyalty but protected criminals inside our own family.

I tried to end it.

Victor stopped me.

Dominic closed his eyes.

There it was.

The truth.

He believed the Ferraro name belonged to him.

He believed you were too sentimental to lead.

He believed Claire was your weakness.

A pause.

He was wrong.

Dominic looked at Claire.

The letter continued.

Claire is not your weakness.

She is the only reason you still have a soul.

The words destroyed him.

Because his father had known.

He had known everything.

A sound came from outside.

A car door.

Then another.

Dominic immediately folded the letter.

“Claire.”

She saw his expression.

“What?”

“Take the boys.”

Her face changed.

“Dominic—”

“Now.”

The lights went out.

Again.

But this time Dominic was ready.

Men moved through the house.

Not amateurs.

Professionals.

Dominic reached for his weapon.

Claire grabbed his arm.

“Don’t.”

He looked at her.

“You have children.”

The words stopped him.

Because she was right.

He was not fighting for revenge.

He was fighting to bring them home alive.

The back door opened.

Three men entered.

Dominic moved.

Fast.

Silent.

Precise.

But there were too many.

A fight erupted through the mansion.

Glass shattered.

Footsteps echoed.

Then—

A voice.

“Dominic.”

Everyone stopped.

Victor Salvatore stepped into the room.

Older.

Gray hair.

Same calm smile.

“You look just like your father.”

Dominic stared at him.

“You killed him.”

Victor smiled.

“No.”

A pause.

“I let him die.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Dominic’s eyes became empty.

“Where are my sons?”

Victor looked toward the hallway.

“They’re safe.”

Dominic moved forward.

Victor raised a hand.

“Because if you kill me…”

He smiled.

“You lose them.”

The room froze.

Dominic knew.

This was not a threat.

It was a game.

And Victor had been playing for eleven years.

“What do you want?”

Victor looked at him.

“Your empire.”

Dominic laughed quietly.

“You think I care about that anymore?”

Victor’s expression changed.

For the first time.

Doubt.

Dominic stepped closer.

“You still don’t understand.”

A pause.

“You spent eleven years trying to control my family.”

His voice became deadly.

“But you forgot something.”

“What?”

Dominic looked toward Claire.

Then toward the hallway where his sons were hidden.

“I already lost everything once.”

Silence.

“So I’m not afraid anymore.”

Victor stared.

And Dominic Ferraro said the words that changed the war:

“The Ferraro empire ends tonight.”

Outside, sirens filled the streets.

Inside, the war began.

Not for money.

Not for power.

Not for territory.

For three little boys who had never been supposed to exist.

And for the first time in his life…

Dominic Ferraro was ready to destroy everything he built.

May you like

To save what he loved.
