CHAPTER 4 – THE TRUTH THAT COULD DESTROY DOMINIC

The blood on Dominic Ferraro’s shirt was still warm when he realized something terrifying.
He was not angry.
Not yet.
Anger came later.
After the calculation.
After the planning.
After the quiet moment when he decided exactly how much pain someone deserved.
But right now…
He was afraid.
Not for himself.
Never for himself.
He was afraid because three little boys were sitting on the floor of Claire’s apartment, staring at him with wide eyes, and for the first time in his life Dominic Ferraro understood what it meant to have something you could not replace.
A person could rebuild an empire.
A person could make money again.
A person could survive losing power.
But a father only got one chance to protect his children.
And someone had just fired a bullet through that chance.
The first thing Dominic did after the attack was not call his men.
It was not hunt the shooter.
It was not punish whoever was responsible.
It was kneel in front of his sons.
The same men who had watched Dominic command armies, negotiate with criminals, and destroy enemies had never seen him do something so simple.
He checked every one of them.
Hands.
Faces.
Shoulders.
Making sure they were real.
Making sure they were breathing.
The loud one, the boy who had asked him if he really was their father, stared at him.
“Are you hurt?”
Dominic looked at him.
The question was so innocent it almost broke him.
“A little.”
The boy frowned.
“Because of us?”
“No.”
Dominic answered immediately.
“Never because of you.”
The boy studied him.
Then slowly nodded.
Like he was memorizing the answer.
Dominic realized something in that moment.
His sons had spent eight years learning how to survive without him.
Now he had to learn how to deserve them.
An hour later, Ferraro Tower became a fortress.
Security doubled.
Every camera in a five-mile radius was being reviewed.
Every vehicle near Claire’s apartment was being traced.
Every person connected to Marco Bellini was being questioned.
But Dominic sat in his office staring at one thing.
A file.
The file that had been hidden for eleven years.
The file that could destroy everything.
Nick stood across from him.
“We found the shooter.”
Dominic looked up.
“Who?”
“Not a professional.”
“That’s impossible.”
Nick nodded.
“I thought the same.”
He placed a photograph on the desk.
Dominic looked at it.
A young man.
Early thirties.
Unknown.
“Name?”
“Lucas Moretti.”
Dominic frowned.
“Moretti?”
A cold feeling entered the room.
Because the Moretti name was familiar.
Very familiar.
“The Morettis have been dead for years.”
Nick nodded.
“Officially.”
Dominic looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
Nick opened another folder.
“Lucas Moretti was the son of Anthony Moretti.”
The room went silent.
Anthony Moretti.
A name from the past.
A name connected to Dominic’s father.
A name that had disappeared after a violent internal conflict fourteen years earlier.
Dominic stood slowly.
“My father killed him.”
Nick hesitated.
“That’s what we were told.”
The sentence hit him.
Again.
What we were told.
Those words had become the foundation of his entire life.
What he was told.
What he believed.
What someone wanted him to believe.
Dominic opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Old financial records.
Private meetings.
Payments.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then stopped.
A signature.
His father’s.
But beside it…
Evelyn’s.
Dominic felt the air leave his lungs.
“What is this?”
Nick looked serious.
“We think your father and Evelyn were involved in something bigger than we knew.”
Dominic stared at the papers.
“What?”
Nick lowered his voice.
“Your father wasn’t trying to destroy the Morettis.”
A pause.
“He was trying to expose them.”
Dominic looked up.
“What?”
“Anthony Moretti wasn’t the enemy.”
The silence was unbearable.
“He was an ally.”
Dominic shook his head.
“No.”
But Nick continued.
“The war between Ferraro and Moretti wasn’t real.”
Dominic’s face hardened.
“Careful.”
“I’m sorry, Boss.”
“No.”
Dominic stared at him.
“I need you to say it.”
Nick took a breath.
“The war was created.”
That night, Dominic went to the old Ferraro estate.
The place where he grew up.
The place where his father taught him what power meant.
The place where his mother used to sing while cooking dinner.
The place where Dominic learned that love and fear could exist in the same house.
Evelyn was waiting.
She was sitting in the library.
Exactly like she belonged there.
Because she always had.
Dominic entered alone.
She smiled.
“You finally came.”
Dominic closed the door.
“You knew.”
Evelyn looked calm.
“Knew what?”
“About Claire.”
No reaction.
“About my sons.”
Still nothing.
“You knew.”
Evelyn sighed.
“Dominic—”
“Do not lie to me.”
His voice shook the room.
For the first time, Evelyn looked surprised.
Not scared.
Surprised.
Because Dominic had never spoken to her that way.
He had always been the boy who trusted her.
The nephew who believed she protected him.
“You have no idea what you’re asking.”
Dominic laughed quietly.
“No?”
He placed the photograph of Claire and the children on the table.
“I spent eleven years mourning a child who was alive.”
Evelyn looked at the picture.
“They are innocent.”
Dominic stared.
“That’s your defense?”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“That is my warning.”
The room went cold.
“Warning?”
Evelyn stood.
“You think Claire was the only person hiding things from you?”
Dominic froze.
“What does that mean?”
She walked toward the window.
“Your father knew the Ferraro empire was corrupted.”
Dominic said nothing.
“He knew people inside the family were selling information.”
“Who?”
Evelyn looked back.
“Everyone.”
A pause.
“Almost everyone.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
“Explain.”
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“You were never supposed to become the head of this family.”
The words landed.
“What?”
“Your father had another plan.”
Dominic stared.
“What plan?”
“To destroy the empire.”
Silence.
“He wanted to end the Ferraro organization before it became something worse.”
Dominic felt something crack inside him.
“My father built this family.”
“No.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“He built a prison.”
The words hurt because some part of Dominic wondered if she was right.
All his life, he had protected the Ferraro name.
But what had the name cost him?
His mother.
His innocence.
Claire.
His sons’ childhood.
Evelyn continued.
“Your father trusted one person to help him.”
Dominic already knew the answer.
“Who?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Claire.”
The world stopped.
Claire sat on the edge of her bed when Dominic arrived.
She immediately knew something was wrong.
Not because he looked angry.
Because he looked lost.
Dominic Ferraro was never lost.
“What happened?”
He did not answer.
He walked inside.
Closed the door.
Then asked:
“Did my father know about the children?”
Claire went still.
The silence was enough.
Dominic closed his eyes.
“How long?”
Claire whispered:
“Before they were born.”
His heart dropped.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I couldn’t.”
“Why?”
“Because your father asked me not to.”
Dominic stared.
“My father?”
Claire nodded.
“He knew Evelyn was watching him.”
The pieces moved.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“He knew?”
“Yes.”
“He knew she would hurt you?”
“Yes.”
“He knew she would take my children?”
Claire looked down.
“He knew she would use them against you.”
Dominic turned away.
Because the truth was becoming too large.
Too heavy.
“What was my father trying to do?”
Claire looked at him.
“Save you.”
The words destroyed him.
Because Dominic spent eleven years believing his father’s legacy was something worth protecting.
But maybe his father had spent his final days trying to protect Dominic from it.
The next morning, Dominic called an emergency meeting.
Every major Ferraro leader arrived.
But this time, Dominic did not sit at the head of the table.
He stood.
Different.
Changed.
“The Ferraro empire has been built on lies.”
Nobody spoke.
“Eleven years ago, someone inside this family tried to erase my future.”
Silence.
“They failed.”
He placed the photograph of his sons on the table.
“Because my sons are alive.”
A few people looked shocked.
Dominic continued.
“And now I know something else.”
He looked around.
“The enemy was never outside.”
The room became tense.
“The enemy was inside.”
Suddenly, the lights went out.
Everyone reached for weapons.
A second later, emergency lights turned on.
A screen at the front of the room flickered.
A video appeared.
Evelyn.
Everyone stared.
But Dominic noticed something else.
A man standing behind her.
Someone he recognized.
Someone who should not have been there.
Someone he buried years ago.
His father’s oldest friend.
The man who had raised Dominic beside his own father.
The man who had taught him everything about power.
Dominic whispered his name.
“Victor.”
The video began.
Victor looked directly into the camera.
And smiled.
“Hello, Dominic.”
A pause.
“You finally found the truth.”
Dominic stood frozen.
Victor continued.
“But you’re too late.”
The screen went black.
Then one final message appeared.
YOUR CHILDREN WERE NEVER THE SECRET.
A pause.
YOU WERE.
Dominic stared at the words.
And for the first time in his life…
He wondered if everything he knew about himself was a lie.
Outside Ferraro Tower, a black car waited in the rain.
Inside, someone watched the building.
Someone who had been waiting eleven years.
Someone who knew Dominic Ferraro better than anyone.
A person who knew his greatest weakness.
His family.
And his greatest mistake.
Thinking the war was over.
It had never ended.
May you like
It had only been waiting.
